Earlier this year we upgraded most of our network core to Aruba 6000 series switches running Aruba CX-OS. I've been working with our networking group to finally get SNMP configured on these devices so we can monitor them in Solarwinds.
And, for the most part, we are to monitor them quite adequately. However, we seem to be getting limited Layer 3 topology information from these switches; e.g. specifically we are not able to retrieve any IP addresses assigned to these switches (outside of the IP address we use to monitor the device). While this isn't a huge deal for NPM, it does affect our ability to properly map the network at that level. We have the same issue with our asset management solution where the problem is more complicated, as that software isn't able to correlate IP addresses back to a single device, which is significant when these are the core devices for our entire network.
I am referencing the Success Center article regarding topology information (What object IDs (OIDs) does the Orion Platform poll for network topology information) as a source for what the products are expecting from the switches. And, indeed, when I attempt to query the devices directly via SNMP there is no information returned. I am specifically looking at 1.3.6.1.2.1.4.20 or 1.3.6.1.2.1.4.28 for the IPv4 address tables (we are still using IPv4 pretty much exclusively internally).
I've delved into this far deeper than I've ever gone in my understanding of SNMP, even to the point of downloading the MIBs from HP to trying to decipher them. I'm out of my depth, admittedly. I realize that the support for these switches is fairly recent, and I'm actually happy with most of what we get in terms of identification, hardware health and interface monitoring. I'm hoping someone here might have some experience with this product that may have some insight, or at least some ideas. Of course better yet would be a response from someone at Solarwinds stating "Yes, we are aware of this issue and are working on it/have a workaround/doing something" but that's asking a lot.
I'm blathering now. If anyone has any thoughts or suggestions I would heartily welcome them.
Thanks!
