Hp and cisco devices not showing in solar winds

Ok I am trying to find out a couple of question.Before i get into those questions I would explain my situtaion.I have been task to generate a network report for a inventory on our network of our hp and Cisco devices.Well when i run the report not all of my network devices are being discovered by solar winds.The report is only showing 1104 devices on the network compared to roughly 6000 that actually exist on the network.What can be the cause of that.

These are my questions

1.What could cause the devices not to show up in solar winds

2.how can i go about fixing this issue so the time a report is ran.The result would be accurate.

3.Is this a common problem when you have Hp and Cisco device on the same network.

Any answers or suggestions would really be appreciated.

Good afternoon kad5118,

to address your questions in order:

1. The devices may not have SNMP credentials on them. I would log in and double check the Read Only string at a minimum to make sure that it matches what you are using in SolarWinds. Also make sure the Access Control lists are correct and that a Firewall is not blocking access, and ensure that your server can reach the target device by ping.

2. If the following is correct, you can add the nodes manually through Settings-> Manage Nodes and click Add Node. If you are doing a large amount of Nodes, I would recommend the Network Discovery and follow the steps in the Wizard.

3. I personally run a network of approximately 500 Cisco Nodes, and about 2500 interfaces on those nodes. I would have to say I have never had an issue with nodes on SolarWinds, versions 10.3, 10.6, 10.6.1, and 10.7

Ok thanks for your reply,

your statment has brought me to a another question,I do know that solar winds is very complex with its features and possibilities.What i want to ask you is there a feature with solar winds to where we can run a scan that would filter out which deivces have different snmp creditals for the nodes that are showing up on our network map vs those that arent showing up.

It depends on what you mean by filter. If you want to know what devices are not using SNMP, you can always run a report for credentials and set it to filter out your SNMP strings. You can also go to settings->manage nodes and sort on the left side by credentials.

sorry for the late reply how would i setup the report for credentials and enable the filter.I am new to solar winds sorry for all of the questions.

sorry for such a long delay in the response.What i am wondering the steps that you stated in your previous responses.Does all of have to be done at the solar winds server or can it be done being logged in as an admin.

First question...

Are all ~6,000 devices seen in SolarWinds?

Second...

Are there only HP or only Cisco devices being discovered?

It is a bit unclear if this is a reporting or discovery issue.

If this is a discovery issue, make sure you are using SNMP community strings that cover all your devices. By default, discovery ignores Ping only devices.

Sorry for the delay in my response. This would have to be done logged in to the machine. It is a legacy report and has to be run from the legacy report writer.
