Hello,
I'm new to Solarwinds and not even sure I am posting this in the right group.
I have past history with Telecom NMS systems such as HP Openview and the like but Solarwinds seems to be a different animal. I don't manage the SW system but have a lot of equipment that is managed by SW. I have two questions that have been causing frustration.
We use Orion to manage our network, many of our infrastructure support systems are monitored via an RTU and dry contacts using SNMP traps. When a trap comes in it temporarily sets the element status indicator to reflect the trap state change, then processes and forwards the alarm (via email, pager etc via external systems.) and then the element fault status clears and the element appears in Solarwinds to be just fine when in fact it isn't.
I.E. the alarm state is not persistent for SNMP traps, it is momentary.
Qusetion 1) How do we go about updating element status via the SNMP trap state (fault or reset for instance) in real time so that Orion shows the actual state of an element? I believe we want to start a poll when we receive a trap that shows a fault, and set the element state show the fault and maintain this state until either an SNMP GET or SNMP Trap shows the fault has cleared.
Question 2) How do we go about showing elements geographically on a map that show color codes that reflect the state of a site (which could be drilled down to the node level and beyond)? This would be very helpful in an outage affecting several sites.
Thanks in advance for your help
Gary
