Hi. Any word on 2024 MVP nominations? Apologies... I'm a little slow getting back into the swing of things with my new job.

Long overdue BUMP!

Definitively Yes!

I was LITERALLY writing my next blog about the very same exact topic. The. Same. Exact. Topic. :-( Back to the drawing board for inspiration....

Each year I like to give my team three type of goals: Technical, Organizational, and "Soft" goals. This applies for training for the year, "All Technical makes Jack a dull boy!" I also setup short-term goals: Make an improvement, any improvement, over 3 months: technical, procedural, documentation, certification. Mid-term:…

My first exposure to automation was in the 70's when I went to the grocery store with my mom. In the checkout line was the new scanner. No longer did the cashier have to weigh produce and key everything in. I am sure automation has started well before then and it has kept on going. The creative forward-thinking individuals…

Link worked for me fine. Hmm...

I don't consider myself too much of a paranoid but this Vizio realization did confirm some of my fears. This is the reason (and honestly, Black Mirror) that I haven't bought an Amazon Alexa. I believe there is a saturation point of "being connected" (and we are probably way past it now with IoT), I have to preserve some of…

I worked in Managed Services for 10 years. I witnessed many occasions where we fired the customer or where we should have. Sometimes the relationship isn't a good fit for either side. Expectations aren't being met and distrust is felt by both sides. And then there is the cost of doing business... for each party. The…

Good read. Fun, especially on a day where I don't feel like doing much! I look forward to more.

My picture. Tried not to break the lens. What I was not able to capture is that those people standing behind me are actually the developers playing table tennis. No rest for Support!

We are mice on a wheel when it comes to security. We hurry to run in place!

My encouragement to you. Thwack points accumulation is a grind. You just accumulate, accumulate, accumulate. You'll get the occasional Big Score! But most of the time you'll get the 5, 10, 50 pts. And those add up quickly. Stay active and you'll soon find yourself climbing the ranks.

Really enjoyed the "Cloud Adoption" slide. I have seen that firsthand... An "IT Versatilist"? This is a new one to me. This isn't the first time that I have heard the marvels of new gen companies like Facebook, Airbnb, and Uber be hailed. There is more to that story... Lastly, I really appreciate the NIST Framework slide.…

My biggest fear, and it is one I used during a tabletop BCP/DR exercise, is a successful, and destructive, network hack against our corporate network during the wee hours of the morning when no one is at their desks (This company has made a conscious decision not to have a 24x7 NOC). By the time the Infrastructure Group…

#1. My kid's were horrible when it came to finding Easter eggs. At one point I felt like a bad kids sports coach. "C'mon! It's right there!" #2. The Facebook report is spot on and I became a victim of it. So I started following certain FB entities: Kid President, Chive Charities, etc. They helped balance out the negativity.

Leon wrote: "As IT professionals, we need to remember that the next generation might lack our experience, but that doesn't mean they lack skills, intelligence, commitment, or even common sense." They also have energy and stamina. I remember when I was in my 20's when I couldn't work smarter I would compensate by working…

We are bouncing an idea around here to help deal with out VM sprawl. A recertification process for all of our VM's. Systems Team: "Hey! Do you still need this VM? What's it for?" Service Owner: "I don't know even know what it is used for..." We've had that conversation more than once already.

I think the best meal is one that is made for me. :-) However, I do love to grill the meats.

100Gps has me salivating. What a tease! Regardless... great write-up. I wish these conferences would find a place on the east coast.

Here you go...

BUMP! BUMP!

To piggyback on this... Add a floating 'SUBMIT' / 'CANCEL' button pair to the "Edit Properties" page

We are living out that scenario now at my company. We are bringing on 20 locations to our WAN and AD structure. Talk about bludgeoning square pegs through round holes. Our leadership doesn't care about these details, they are focused on the big picture for these acquisitions. It is left to us IT management to fight these…

Your example and mine are slightly different. Weathermen use %'s which are, most likely, based on scientific data and mathematic calculations. Therefore it is not an unknowing falsehood My example does not use any hard data. That is where the difference lies. And your point on sources reminds me of one of my favorite…

With your 1 single vote you could be the Thwackster to push me over the 100k threshold! Vote today!!!

I have signed up! I love the back-to-basics classes. Technology changes and so do the way we work with it. On a personal level, it makes sense every so often to spend a few minutes to go back and refresh ourselves.

* The news of Microsoft's purchase of LinkedIn is making its rounds. Chris Hardwick on his game show, @Midnight, opened with this. He even made a joke about poor Clippy from MS Office 98 desperately looking for work. ** The Cubs are the Cubs, But Joe Maddon is a great manager. Still, don't get your hopes up. Cubs... ***…

I explored this a few years ago and I found untapped wells of information and resources available. But my company, like most, didn't tap it appropriately, didn't share the MS relationship with any groups other than their own. And knowing how broad-sweeping that Microsoft is across every company that is a crying shame.
