I find the link for Day 30 Density but when I click on it it takes me to an Oops! page. Oooh the anticipation is heart-wrenching.

Just curious... when are the points being awarded? I am looking to jump up a level... ;-)

The grass is always greener... except when it snows... which it hear it does A LOT in Canada. BTW, heckuva catch!!!

I was playing with Autoexec.bat & Config.sys with Novell for automation back in the day. We also did some rudimentary imaging with NT4 for automation purposes. I finally sold NCM to my Network team earlier this year. They were still manually configuring switches up until Feb 2017. ugh.

Every Renfest I get excited for turkey legs and everytime I am reminded that they are oversalted and overcooked and there isn't enough water in the joint to wash away the taste. BLAH!

1 star! Sorry, I can't be happy about this. You were a wonderful Admin to work with maria.bungau. Good luck to you in all your future endeavors. And I think it was Twain who said: "If you love what you do you'll never work a day in your life."

One important detail we overlooked during our migration was the implementation of a security hierarchy. When the migration was done we found that we had way too many people with Admin privileges. And people who had no business having admin privileges. It took over a year to roll them back.

Why do businesses not follow these basic practices you ask? Well... In my experiences they generally do. But there is usually this one app, or appliance, or piece of code, that is either: old, obsolete, the vendor is out of business, the SME's are no longer employed, it's orphaned, etc. and no one wants to touch it for…

BTW, I still wear my Sun Certified Systems Administrator (ver. 2.7) badge with pride!

With regards to documentation how would you consider the rate of change to your IT landscape? At my company I would rate it as volatile. In the past 3 years near 100% of our infrastructure has been refreshed and we've had considerable turnover. The ripple effect is that our documentation is practically obsolete by the time…

Obligatory Friday bump!

Ahhh! High Availability... the unfulfilled promise of IT Service Delivery. I would like to meet High Availability one day and punch it in its head! The headaches that thing has given me over the years. Blah! On a lighter note of AWS's crash...

I read a statistic a few years ago that said 73% of the world's "inventory" has passed through an SAP at least once. Sapphire is only their premiere conference. They have about a dozen conferences every year: IT, Human Resources, Oil & Gas, Financial, Security & GRC... the list goes on and on.

The starpower cast alone puts Sneakers over the top: Redford, Potier, Strathairn, Akroyd, River Phoenix... plus a few other surprises. If you haven't seen this movie add it to your list.

Fortunately SolarWinds has Thwack. Not only is Thwack awesome online community but it is also has a wealth of cool tools and services available for free. When I run into other SolarWinds users and I ask them if they are on Thwack and they give me the "Ehhh!" response, I tell them that they are missing out. Make time...

Interesting list. I find this one to be a little more tech-heavy than the first list. Personally, I am indifferent to that. But my (limited) summer reading is usually on things that interest me outside my career. History, biographies, pop culture, etc.

Speaking of interesting Microsoft partnerships... Azure is partnering with SAP to host HANA. GAMECHANGER!!! https://news.sap.com/microsoft-sap-give-customers-trusted-path-digital-transformation-cloud/?source=social-Global-BrandG…

This is a similar article from last week's Fed write-up. It appears that the Fed gvt. is really struggling with adopting the Cloud. That's a similar story as that of the private sector.

It warms my heart to know that there are others out there in the Infrastructure/Support realm of IT who never had a taste for coding/development. I feel very insecure about my shortcoming. To compensate I've always strived to be a "Vision Guy!" and to be able to connect with the developers so that they could deliver code…

What? Now URL to the company page or direct line to Rob's cellphone? Aghast! But in all seriousness this is interesting stuff... my company treats VTC like a black box with a "Set It and Forget It" attitude. And when it doesn't work all haeilfire rains down from the executives...

We have a rescue cat who was traumatized by previous owners. How do I know? She is terrified of me when I am standing. But when I am sitting or lying down she treats me completely differently. She shows me no affection whatsoever however, and I have had cats my entire life. But my 9yo whirling dervish of a son who bounces…

Bitcoin & Blockchain are the FUTURE!!! The future isn't today! Be forewarned people and be careful of the hype. The concept is great but the reality is wrought with peril. If you follow the news you know bitcoin has been going up and down like a yo yo on speculation. Personally, I am not ready to bank my future on it.

"Automation is coming" What happens when it gets here? Better question... Will we know when it gets here? Folks, the reality is automation has been here. It's been here for decades. My first interaction with automation was when my neighborhood Safeway switched to the food scanners at the checkout line when I was a little…

The "Keep Everything Forever" approach is indicative of the DevOps model. More. More! MORE! to quickly unsustainable levels will be the norm if Dev is not kept in check.

You bring up a very good, and often overlooked, point. SO many DR plans are entirely focused on failing over to DR. SO very few give any consideration on failing back. When data is written to the systems while they are running in DR that data needs to be retained. Here is our example: Our PRD SAP database is several TB. It…

I remember these questions! I have to say I am not all that surprised by the answers. People want to work, and will look for any way how to keep the preverbal ball rolling.

"No More Little White Lies" need to know how to be turned into "opportunities." No more removing problematic or outdated nodes from monitoring because "no one cares", or "nothing is being done about it." It's there on your network, isn't it? Keep that bright red alert front and center on that important dashboard so it…
