Another great article. I got my hands dirty with Corel WP, token ring, banyan vines, and others. While I keep that nonsense off my résumé now the skills I picked working with those "technologies of the day" provided me with skills that I still use today. Research, learning, investigating, problem solving, brainstorming,…

I have attended a few communications and personal improvement over the years and they have all led the attendees to confront their own biases. These recommendations here are excellent advice for everyone, professional or in their personal life. Thanks for sharing this.

Prioritize monitoring for maximum security That should come with a disclaimer. Monitoring should not be intended to replace a sound and comprehensive security threat and prevention framework. Instead, monitoring should be used as a critical part of the entire security program.

lol! Gamechanger!

I created a poll for this year's SAP event right HERE.

How can you be here and on THWACKcamp at the same time?!? It's uncanny. And about these robots... has no one else watched the Black Mirror episode, Metalhead? What are those scientists thinking??

I recently took over responsibility of network security at my company (AAAAAAAGH!!!!). Let's just say security was an afterthought prior to me taking the helm. OMG the things me and my engineer are finding. And yes, we do have an AUP that every associate signs. Accountability without consequence means nothing. HR is…

Oh.. and one last point to add to this blog. test! Test! TEST!!! I cannot count how many times we at my company "assumed" something was going to work when we either: fired it up, brought it online, failed over to it, etc... and it fails, miserably! Test you "Dial Home" features. Test your OOB connections. Test your remote…

Nice write-up. I am finding that you and I are in a lot of the same sessions. I guess that says something. Congratulations on the awards, BTW. 500k Thwack points is in sight.

Very interesting perspective. For your last bullet point there has to be places you get really jazzed up for when going? (Israel sounds like one of those places) And some places you dread? (Las Vegas is that for me)

adatole I look forward to finally getting to meet you at ThwackCamp. I'll be onsite at Austin. I have no idea what I am going to say because I am lousy with smalltalk. lol! But............ Yea! ;-)

"DevOps" to me equates to being subservient to the Developers. "Infrastructure! Keep up!!!" Interesting how DevOps includes existing tried and true methodology such as Continuous Improvement, which exists in almost every other framework. "Bigger! Faster! More! delivered Now! is the rule of the day... or else to the Cloud…

The pacemaker story is yet another example of why I envision IoT to be a bad thing. I would not want my lifesaving device to be so accessible. Too dangerous. As for the AT&T router vulnerability story... that's just sloppy. Careless and sloppy!

My lifelong goal is to live down at the beach. Living in between Balt & DC I am bearing witness to the eventuality of the two cities becoming one. Too much development, too much congestion, too much paving over, too many people. I'll take waking up to the sunrise over the ocean every morning,,,

There is Looks and then there is Performance. The J-31 can look similar to the F-22 for reasons not involving a data breach. Chinese aeronautic engineers could have walked into a hobby shop and picked up a model plane to build. Engine, aerodynamics, weaponry, etc. If those are similar... that would be a more telling…

While I am generally a fan of staying current with product version I have to say that the latest round has torpedoed Patch Mgr for me. We've been dealing with it for a couple of weeks now and it is hurting. I realize that PM isn't SolarWinds favorite but the fallout has been pretty devastating, Case # - 00210951. Anyne…

Silly question: Have the final week and Grand Prize winners for September been announced? (Forgive me, I am inundated with Thwack emails every Monday morning)

I am now more worried about Black Mirror's Metalhead coming to fruition more so than SkyNet. But the fears are consistent. Defense contractors weaponize new technology and open a Pandoras Box that humanity quickly loses control of. We've already seen how Twitter ruined Microsoft's AI in a day during a focused attack.…

As a manager I absolutely love conducting this exercise with staff who are new to my team and/or project (which, BTW, I stole from "The West Wing): Me: "Are you able to tell me what time it is?" So-and-So: "It's 3:30." Me: "That isn't what I asked you." But anyway, back to what you are looking for... We've setup similar…

I think I am one of the few people who actually like Upgrade. I get the feeling that I am throwing my vote away on this one.

The drones in the warehouse is an interesting story especially in my line of business (wine & spirits wholesale distribution). You know SAP is tied into this and they have their own technology to interface with it: SAP Leonardo Why yes. Yes they do!

We took the classic route over the past 7 years. Virtualize all. Then migrate non-PRD to CLoud. Then migrate non-essential and service-related apps to the Cloud. This is where we are now. We are left with peeling critical apps one at a time and throwing them up.

WOW! You folks gave this stuff a lot of thought! Kudos to all. Impressive stuff. Okay... here goes my attempt! There once was a router from Nantucket... On second thought, never mind... :-)

"...find beauty in what you do." I couldn't agree with you more. I always say that I envy the ditch digger because: he/she gets to work outside. And at the end of the day he/she can look down and admire his/her work.

It's Thursday, Bump Day!

Very true. Not too many companies have "divorced" SAP. Interesting perspective on its recognition. I think once you are involved with SAP you start see its logo everywhere: NHL, NBA, tennis, PGA, auto racing, etc. They are a major sponsor... but their logo is low key people usually miss it.

We use LEM... it likes to wrestle with you when you interface with it. But then again we are far down the Maturity Model Index when it comes to this stuff. I am afforded the luxury of simplicity over effectiveness with my SIEM... for now.

BUMP! Let's make it happen, people!
