I listened to the panel in ThwackCamp 2015 and I've watched and reader other experts. The industry is close. Many will make the leap successfully while others will be left in place for many reasons... notably cost, constraints, legacy, and expertise (lack thereof). I chuckled at your closing statement rschroeder . But in…

When we moved away from Big Brother years ago this capability was a big gap in the SolarWinds deliverables. Up until the release of PerfStack I would have to open up multiple Solarwinds screens and compare graphs to produce this composite data. WTG SolarWinds for buildings this.

I am still trying to figure out how to successfully monitor VMware logging using Solarwinds LEM. I am trying to start out with merely the basics, VM suspended, and it is giving me fits. Anybody have experience with this?

I like your points. However, one small nit to pick: How can you forget the actual movie, AI? I believe the term AI is more of a long-term vision than a current state. Comparatively, the technology is lightyears ahead of where it was 20 years ago and it will be lightyears behind where it will be in 20 years. Who knows? AI…

mikesky check this out. The logs we want appear to be stored in a SQL DB.

Thanks for this write-up. I forwarded it to my bosses-with-doors to let them know our high-level response strategy to this latest firedrill. They were pleased (shocker!) that my team had a plan in place and that we were able to leverage existing tools. I swear, I think they believe I wrote it. But that's another story...…

Fantastic article! Got the Pete Monaghan 5-star approval. I loved the graph too. Similar to the graph we use for SAP implementation projects. The teams I work with here are challenged with the effort to automate small and mundane tasks. And no, I won't change your mind... because I agree with you. :-)

Good points about the networked facilities equipment: HVAC's, UPSes, fire suppression, etc. I subscribe to US-CERT alerts. Several times a week I receive alerts from them for facilities vulnerability announcements and subsequent vendor remediation steps. (Siemens is a busy boy these days)

Soooo.... did rebooting it work?

I do/did have a "Circle of Trust" for many years when I worked at a MSP. There was an equal balance of technology, business, and personal, advisors that I could call upon. When I was let go after 10 years I was left with a HUGE vacuum that I have spent the past 6 years trying to fill. I know quite a few people who excel in…

I'm in the running! I'm in the running!!!

It is interesting that in y2017 that core monitoring components still gravitate to: Traps, Messages, and SNMP. WMI is great but it isn't without its flaws. I foresee the nextgen of true monitoring will be closer to UX. Breakthroughs like AppStack and NetPath are steps towards that.

That reminds me of Ozzy Fudd, The Wabbit Slayer from the days of Dr. Demento. (skip the homegrown vid and just listen tot he music) Aussie/Ozzy Fudd The Rabbit Slayer (Kill Da Wabbit) - YouTube

The Monitoring aspect is key. Here is my real-world example: we have a whole bunch of "stuff" on our network beyond standard network equipment, servers, printers, and workstations. Our Security approach has been concentrated on what I listed, not the non-standard stuff. We agreed to a free evaluation by a NetSec provider.…

I am a big fan of Syslog and SNMP Traps. But I have a stupid question to the quorum: I have a bulked-up NPM and I have LEM... where does Kiwi Server add value to the triad?

My job as an Availability Manager, with no Admin Rights on the network, is to STOP the blame game and to hold people and groups accountable. SolarWinds is my "pointin' stick!" to do so. I keep people at the table, challenge the MTTI, and drive the MTTR so that we meet our SLA's. I frequently run RCA's, track Service…

We use QOS for VOIP only. We aren't that sophisticated to use it for anything else even though we probably should. Other than video does anyone else use QOS for any other type of traffic?

thx! Even more reason why I have to convert my new company

I am a fan of less meetings, and for those meetings to be more effective. Let's be honest, training in meeting management is sparse and frequently overlooked when it really shouldn't be. Office productivity would increase immeasurably from it.

At this stage in my career I seldom seek glory. I go with that one talk bubble that brags with walking out everyday at 5pm. That is what I am most proud of.

As a CBCP I can highly recommend that you review those DR Plans. Hurricane, Tornado, Fire, Flood, and Nor'Easter seasons a'comin! And let's not forget about the social and political unrest that is brewing under the surface in our society. Try this little exercise. Look at your Plan. Note how many steps fall on one…

Nice!!! <applause> Good times is had all the way around...

You're welcome! Feel free to mark my initial comment as 'Helpfyl'! I'm slummin' for Thwack points! :-) Also, if things get better I'll keep you in mind and shoot you a note.

YES!!! We signed a MSA with CDW so now all of our hardware is covered but SAM is reporting the opposite.

My suggestion is that you should talk about not just we, as the best and brightest of SolarWinds customers, are doing with the Solarwinds product suite; but also about where SolarWinds is going next with their product offering based on the demands and feedback provided to you on Thwack, trade shows, SWUG's, conferences,…

I love this idea since LEM is being positioned as a SOEM, but doesn't this basically eliminate Kiwi as a product?
-
Thanks! Sorry! Too many balls in the air to keep track.

All very good stuff. I like to remind my fellow IT brethren from time to time. We got into this field to help other people do their stuff. We have to have some patience with them.

I love playing, "Guess what # I'm thinking game!" NOT!!!

Hmm... if so, would they call it TEXIT??
