Experts! Experts! Experts! (we have too many JOATS on staff today) Our entire network architecture is screaming for an overhaul. Too many flat networks, too much PRD & non-PRD cohabitation. Large volumes of back-up and replication traffic traversing PRD data networks. No network-layered security between our remote…

Tricks of the trade and years of experience combined together. Also I spent years being on the other end as a technician and I saw good leadership and bad. I took note of both.

While I agree with all of your questions. And yes, this is Amazon, none of this surprises me any. Amazon is plagued with the same issues the rest of us are: legacy systems, human error, unknown dependencies, untested redundancies & assumptions, and unanticipated results. Hey! Now I don't feel so bad about my IT junk…

We categorize all of our nodes into tiers: Tier 1-4. Based on the tier we set a default polling interval for network resources. Since this was a Tier 1 IT Service the interval was 1 minute. Tier 2 is 5 minutes. Tier 3 is 15 minutes. Tier 4 is 30 minutes.

I agree Superfly. Pretty basi unless there is a compelling reason not to.

Neat thing: We use Solarwinds as our Configuration database. The SQL database where all the info is stored is called upon by many external resources for inventory, architecture, planning, etc. I use my Network Management to boost Security Awareness.

A call out to all of my Network friends. Who here is familiar with the Verizon Enterprise Center? I tackled that years ago. Verizon has pumped a lot of time and $$$ into it and it is an awesome tool. But it does require a lot of training and a lot of discipline to stay on top of... especially if you have a variety of…

Busy month behind us. Busy month ahead of us. "The days are long but the years go by fast."

I was a gvt. contractor for a few years and I saw many areas of opportunity for automation. The problem the gvt. faces is that these areas of opportunity usually mean eliminating someone's position. That's difficult to do. New builds allow for those opportunities as new technologies are introduced, etc.

Yes, I agree. I love the infographic to go along with the write-up. The visualization of the possible causes clearly illuminates the umpteen different pieces that can cause email to go slow. To further your point... I would NEVER show this to the end user. Making sure all of those umpteen different pieces are working…

I am not going to lie, coming down the homestretch these words are proving to be a challenge for finding inspiration for writing on. Two days and two words to go. "Return" (huh?) and "Celebrate" (easy!).

As for this corruption with the higher education admissions what I find most interesting is that many people believe is that its over. Too much $$$ involved and too much motivation combined with opportunity. As long as cash is paper and coin stores will have to accept it as is. If, one day.. and I hope that I am not alive…

It will be very interesting what the future in the near-term will hold for all of governmental cybersecurity. The new administration will be directing it toward a whole new vision than in years past. What has always been known to the cyber professionals... the attacks from the other side of the world... has now been…

Where did everyone go? By this time there are at least 20 responses to your blog post. Bueller? Bueller? Bueller?

Negligence. Gross negligence. Average negligence. Reminds me of Tom Cruise's cross examination of Jack Nicholson in A Few Good Men. "You said he was in grave danger. Not just danger, but graaaave danger." I am proud to say that I conduct BCP events that has my company make our DC "Dark". Completely inaccessible. Boy do we…

I am not afraid to admit it... I am excited for AppOptics. I am hoping to build a roadmap where I can offload my Solarwinds footprint to the Cloud...

Some other points to consider: * Know your SLA's & T&C's with your Cloud Provider. And know them well. Better yet, study them before you sign to make sure they align with your business needs. Example: the Provider could schedule maintenance during the wee hours, GMT, Sunday morning. Your business may run critical processes…

A few years ago we implemented CommVault into our existing tape backup solution. At first we decided only to use CommVault for PRD-level systems. After a while we figured out the time, effort, and eventual $$$ that can be saved with an effective backup strategy implemented with CommVault. Now are close to eliminating tapes…

I think that is a great idea. And that was the mindset SAP CEO Bill McDermott was talking about when dealing with internal customers. be proactive. Reach out. Ask the questions. Engage. Try to solve problems. Be empathetic. Use Critical Thinking. Take a service-oriented approach. I train my staff never to think that the…

Yea... I try not to over think these types of questions. But by the time I try not to I already have done so.
