I can not overestimate the importance of the BIA in this process. Conducting a BIA is both a science and an art. One cannot assume that the interviewee will be as forthcoming as you want, usually unintentionally. So you ask probing questions delicately to get them to work through their own assumptions and offer up the…

I still have my dice from when I played. My 20-sided is basically a sphere because it has been rolled so many times. My party's SOP was to rape, pillage, and scorch the earth wherever we went. My older brother was a sadistic DM who was heck bent on making our lives miserable. (sigh!) Good times...

In my 25+ years in IT "learning new skills" has been a constant. But what first started with (very) cheap storage, then quickly into virtualization, and now with the Cloud, "learning new skills" has taken on a new meaning with my fellow IT Support brethren. Their priorities isn't about infrastructure and capacity planning…

Gawd yes. I have 24 Mitel systems (don't ask!), Prairye Fyre & Oaisys with handsets and softphones. If VNQM could support Mitel I would buy it in a hearbeat.

haha! That's a hoot, rschroeder :-)

Scalability & Security... however Security can certainly fall under Manageability right now, are also two very important tenants to Infrastructure Design Characteristics, especially in this day and age of SDN and DevOps. Scalability introduces flexibility which allows for growth and demand. Flexibility in Infra Design, as…

Now wait a sec Jfrazier I just responded to a post by arjantim where it was spouted that SDN was King. And now sqlrockstar is saying storage is King! I am soo confused!!! Who do I worship? Who???

Virtual money with no regulations. What can go wrong with this investment idea? Sign me up! EMAIL: Way back when I took a Business Writing class in college. Invaluable! Years later (late '90's) my company brought in trainers to teach us effective communication, including email writing. I still have the placards from that…

Thanks for this. One other step to add: "Be sure to schedule a proactive appointment with your IT therapist." When I read the title of this blog post I started to get the shakes, no jokes. I remember the first time this hit. It tore through our datacenters at a vindictive pace. For those of you have did not live through…

Hey, why the two threads? DevOps and the Slow Death of Traditional IT Really want to get your point across with this one?? lol!!

I am appreciating the duality of many of these words. I participated in a communications class about 3 years ago. We did an exercise on the word "Spring". The 24 attendees each had to write 10 words that Spring reminded them of. Of the 240 entries there were only 6 duplicates. Words matter. But they have different meanings…

I agree. That choice seems to be unintentionally vague.

Thursday bump!

We recently finished rolling out NCM/NTA in support of installing RADIUS across our landscape. Of the 300+ switches we found that 86 of them were running IOS versions that did not support SSH. NCM 7.6 could not have come at a better time.

Experienced project/incident managers recognize the stress and breaking points and understands counterproductivity. Sometimes standing still for a bit is progress.

Here ya go...

Looking forward to the PerfStack demo today. Interesting on the Microsoft Surface decision for the NSA. Given that the NSA has had multiple internal security breaches in the past 10 years I would have suspected that they would have moved back to desktop towers instead of more portable devices. Interesting article on…

"We test in PRD" was said by adatole during one of the Thwackcamp sessions and I nearly did a spit-take. I still can't get my head around it but I guess that won't matter. If the business has the stomach for it then so it shall be done. I particularly enjoyed reading the section, "Your Network Engineer Isn't a Developer".…

Happy Holidays to everyone at SolarWinds and on Thwack as well. And thanks for having me as an MVP this year. I hope I have proven worthy. Here's to an exciting and adventurous 2018!

We are in the process of streamlining Identity Mgmt in the Cloud as we move towards O365, Skype for Business, and OneDrive. In the early stages we have found that the organic growth and dishevelment of our existing AD has caused a ripple effect on Identity Mgmt not just in the Cloud. The lesson we learned here... don't…

My personal mottos for unplugging for myself and my direct reports: * Aim to leave work everyday on time. Leave me with the impression that you have your poop in order. Working late constantly is admirable, but after a while I will question your organizational skills... and it will quickly become a CLM. * When you go on…

A mistake that I made early on in my career that I regret was shying away from coding/scripting. Do not repeat this in yours. Learn a few. Any current ones and you will be that much better off. Honestly, I do not know how anyone can get hired these days without basic skills in any of the languages. Certainly there is no…

Wow! adatole is serious folks!! Now you got me really thinking on this. So... uhhh!!! do I... ummm!... get some points for my first entry? (I'm sitting at 95k now and I reaaallly want to get to 100k this year!)

DING! DING! Inspiration! I think I'm on to something here...

There is so much more that needs to be done to meet the requirements of protecting, "... sensitive data at risk." Network segmentation with strict ACL's for starters. A comprehensive Asset Mgmt plan whereas MAC address recognition is in place. A BYOD policy that automatically limits access and removes the option from the…

Those who no longer tech... PM! :-) And I am guilty as charged! I've taken those principles that I learned from being a tech, a PM, a manager, a BCP, and incorporated them into my personal life (much to the chagrin of my wife). It has allowed me to be much more productive and efficient with all that I do.

I enjoy helping people. I get a certain satisfaction when I am able to make that Rube Goldberg run and the end result is someone's life is just a tiny bit better. When I first go into IT I was on the Help Desk. To separate myself from the rest of the crowd I always took on the most difficult end users. This was the early…

The cartridge on the lower right is from the doomed 4-part "SwordQuest" series, "EarthWorld". Each game had an egg that revealed a code which told you where to find the secret word in the accompanying comic book. You were to mail in your form for a chance to be flown to Cali to participate in a tourney to win a prize.…

I read this and I handed this off to my DBA's who have been wrestling with the Orion DB for years now. Since I am no DBA, nor do I play one on TV, I asked for their feedback. Here it is below. It is long: Some of the uglier problems detected by the most casual searching. There are three major portions - the email is very…
