I was fortunate that my parents bought some property on the Delaware shore eons ago and built a little house when prices were reasonable. So that wonderful little place in a town where it never gets crowded was our escape many times this year. Ocean swimming, canoeing, kayaking, biking, crabbing, outdoor movies... we…

I am a casual Star Wars fan... so I dread days like this. ugh!

Remember the age old internet adage... If it is free then you aren't the customer then you are the product. And this social status nonsense going on in China should be taken more seriously. There are some real dangerous repercussions in store if that type of social engineering/caste system gains more momentum.

I, as well, would like to see a tighter integration with the Fortigate line. The previous regime at my company left me with 40 Fortigate of various models to monitor. And let me tell you, these things are chatty-kathy's! I am still trying to figure out what is real and what is noise. It'd be great if Orion could get with…

Excellent stuff. I have a hard time getting my DBA's to look at my SolarWinds DB. They consider it a low priority. So these procedures should be helpful for me to get their attention (Yes. I have SQL AppInsight going as well)

Thursday Bump!

While this is cool I thought my idea of a SolarWinds Internet Music Channel was cool too. :-)
-
Thanks for this. I have incorporated these into my overall Security Strategy. I meet with the DBA's next week to discuss. Their isolated fiefdom days are coming to an end. ;-)

The "End User" scenario can be best mitigated with controls and technology. e.g. Removing or minimizing their ability to cause damage with their haphazard and careless clicks, a "safe space".

Good stuff as always. It's not a question of 'If' but more a matter of 'When' ransomware gets into something and reaaaaly wreaks havoc. People are going to get hurt as a result. It's out there and there is nothing we can do to stop it. A little tidbit of the Interstate Highway System, and it is something we see while…

Loving the parallels to D&D so far. While my comment is directly related... Well, it's Saturday. There is a Dungeons & Dragons Memes FB page which is all sorts of funny, but NSFW. I'll leave a clean example:

I've worked with so many talented IT folk. I worked in many offices that operated under the assumption, "This place would fall apart without him/her!" Guess what? Him/Her moved on eventually and everything was just fine. Don't fool yourself in believing that your legacy is your accomplishments. Chances are they will be…

It would surprise me to see the Feds so close to the cutting edge with the blockchain technology. I know some major players in the private sector, SAP for one, is pushing blockchain hard. I would assume that the Feds would be involved in a regulatory role, not so much as a consumer.

#HTTR!!! I share in your enthusiasm of the ultimate demise of Wal-Mart. I have driven through too many little towns that have been decimated by their existence. And I miss the Groucho Marx stork Vlasic icon! I read an article on the eventual hacking of automobiles a while ago. The author pondered the concept of a hack…

I have given similar feedback during the latest RC...

I too thoroughly enjoyed this exercise. It has been far too long since I have been able to express myself in that manner. It felt good to do so. Some words I struggled for inspiration. Others I could have gone on to write 5 times more content. I could see this becoming a once-in-a-while exercise.

If Dr. Teeth doesn't make it to the final round all of you should be ashamed...

For Friday's question I assume "Use the fire extinguisher is step F"? Fun Mission this month folks. I got a perfect 20 for 20... woo hoo!!!

Wow! Eerily similar. After the Novell 4.1 CNA I switched to Microsoft and got my MCSE+I (the 'I' stands for idiot for taking 3 more tests), then I got my Sun Solaris CSA 2.7, and then I started on my CCNA before I got tired of being a test junkie.

I now have 28 Fortinets of different makes and now that Solarwinds no longer backs FSM I would love to see Net Insight for Fortinets and Check Points.

As typical with IOT, prudence and pragmatism to security is negated by OTS. Often times no thought is given to the security implications of connecting one's toaster to wifi… until it is hacked and set to never turn thus catching fire. There are a thousand personal IOT horror stories out there. IOT security is driven by its…

Amongst a huge pile of other things, I donated all of my Solarwinds shirts (save one!) to Hurricane Harvey Relief charities. It was hard to let go but people have lost everything. They are going to need clothes.

I am not one to brag (Yes! Yes I very much am!) But I have submitted the idea of a customer visit to Austin on numerous Mission Complete! surveys. So I am taking full credit for this EXCELLENT prize offering.
-
Is there a timeframe for the points to be posted? I completed the survey mid last week and still no points.

Monitoring Services, and the subsequent alerting/notification, is not a "Beginning/Middle/End!" methodology. Instead, it is a lifecycle. Monitoring Services not only provides monitoring to IT and the technology, it is also subject to the ever-changing dynamics of Org Charts, employee churn, Facility Services, company…

Generally I don't like to make fun of users and/or their complaints. But since this for 250 Thwack points, and in good fun, I'll play along... Much like most of you people, I've been in IT far too long. Essentially, the complaints boil down to the same old statement: "My <blank> isn't working!", whereas the <blank> relies…

I am writing up my first entry on Learn now. I am going to do my best to stick to it everyday. However, working for a wine & spirits distributor in the month of December this can be an ambitious task.

Buying software in the store... Wow! Do I really miss Egghead Software. :-( Back in my Mac Plus days I loved to roam that store and hold the boxes dreaming of my next utility or my next game (usually game)...
