During my years, albeit relatively few, as an IT contractor for the Feds I was always astounded by overall lack of energy that came to vendor mgmt. from both sides. It was basically a "who cares?" attitude. It came across as a type of resignation to the process, and everyone understood that nothing could be done to improve…

Here's my problem: We have too many chefs in the kitchen and we are trying to setup an active monitoring scenario for whenever someone executes a content search in email. We want to know within 5 minutes when an O365 admin kicks one off. This one has been a head-scratcher for us.

The total node count can be found a number of ways under "Manage Nodes." Some steps require simple addition like when you chose the "Status", "Polling Methods", or "Machine Type" options. Or if you only 1 poller click on that and you'll get an exact amount.

So far we are all surviving the storm of TC17. And having an awesome time. Thanks for the wonderful hospitality!

An analogy we use over here is "Fixing the race car as we're driving it!"... if you can imagine that. As for accommodating my employees I have put forth an effort to do so. I was the first manager in IT to institute a "work remote" policy for tasks, or training, that required focus without interruption. Two of my employees…

Bless you for starting this thread, and those of you who have contributed to it after the fact. I have been struggling with this for years at my company. I've been conceptualizing this since forever... but I was never able to put pen to paper. This helps tremendously.

I do! I do! Thank you!!!! :-)

Almost Famous was a great movie about music in the 70's.

What I have witnessed is that all these "nodes" have been sending data to all these "pollers" which has been collecting all of this "data" which no one is looking at. SO, my prediction for 2020 is: .0001% of all the collected IoT data will be consumed. The rest will be flooding the pipe and challenging email for top…

SOLD!!! Long overdue on SNMP Traps, the red-headed stepchild of system messaging. Great article!

Nobody? Nobody uses the Verizon VEC at all? Wow! If you have a Verizon WAN you are really missing out.

The nasty part of the lifecycle, End of Life. Your concerns, networkingnerd, are written from the consumer's perspective. The retailer will benefit from a defined lifecycle. No more owning a clothes iron for 20 years because it will be EOL in 5! No more owning a tea kettle for 15 years because it stops boiling water at…

This is a good methodology for a Steady State environment that does not have a lot of change introduced to it, and I have worked in many of those environments. However, the one I am in now is not that. Commissioning/Decommissioning of servers and services is a constant. Finding newer, better, more comprehensive ways to…

Nice magazine cover. I saw a chart showing the Top 20 companies of 2000 and today and there were only 3, IBM being one of them, that is still on the list. A couple of them no longer exist. It goes to show that no empire is forever and that we ourselves have to be adaptable.

Be mindful of Cloud SLA's and agreed upon maintenance windows. Then make sure your support teams sigh up to receive notifications for them. (Yes, this sounds so basic but you would be surprised. Horribly, horribly surprised...) Many CIO's and decision-makers will sign off and "shift blame/responsibility" off to the vendor…

GAH! I'm third up! Pressure's on to deliver......

Yes to all 10. Now how to get rich? Get all of these to individual practices to exist cohesively. Because depending on the size of your company each one of them could be a full-time job. And I am sure not all of us are that fortunate...

Fun fact! My office is 10 minutes from the UMBC campus. Put Catonsville, MD. on the map! The Retrievers are going down in history! So for all those people who incessantly shared on the FB statuses: "I, state your name, do hereby not allow to FB to use my profile and personal information..." may have actually been onto…

Since late 2016 Facebook has proven itself to be an all around cesspool of activity. I am not much for Twitter and I have become less of a patron of FB. Shame... I had such high hopes for social media too. <sigh>

I am utterly baffled over how Han Solo beat Picard as soundly as he did. I. Just. Don't. Get. It!

Didn't know it was a competition but I'll pass it along to Bill. ;-) Also, I looked at CLUS's Keynote speakers. I guess there is something to be said for quality over quantity.

I stared at this graph for a while. I then clicked the URL and perused that for a while. It doesn't make sense to me. On this chart I see Solarwinds NPM as a fish out of water. Second, I believe that Solarwinds should be more to the right within their quadrant, but that observation is subjective. Regardless... kudos to all…
