As far as I know we're not doing any physical replication. If there is any its only being done on older niche systems that aren't part of our core infrastructure. Hypervisor replication all the way!

Aye, I missed it too. -_-'

I agree with your original thought but don't see what makes you feel "that doesn't seem like the case". SolarWinds is good, but good is the enemy of great. The only way to get better is to be willing to accept criticism about the way you currently do something and be open to alternative methodology. When referencing "a new…

This would be very helpful to have. It's only a minor annoyance, but since some of our reports go to all managers it has turned into an uncomfortable frequently asked question of "why can we not just receive these only in the event that there is actually something to view". I opened a support case on this and I'm sure…

I'm not the only one that manages the NMS but I've picked up the role as the guy to go to when the others have questions. The interesting part is I'm just a network technician where the other guys are network engineers and I'm still learning. That right there says a lot, that I'm able to come in brand new to the…

With Hurricane Matthew looming out in the distance, and about half of our foot print in areas a mandatory evacuations it's quite sobering. If I had to say the thing that scares me the most is that we have something critical hanging out there and not being backed up. Even worse that we will need to restore something from a…

Would you rather spend the first 3 hours of your shift putting out fires that have started since users arrived at work and started complaining or use those 3 hours to look for potential problems that might come up and avoid them before they happen? The answer should be simple. I think that the issue is that most companies…

This isn't a topic that I'm very knowledgeable about as I am still learning about storage. Back in 2008 though HP labs developed a new fangled contraption called a Memristor. I've been waiting to see it be implemented but so far it doesn't look like its going to happen anytime soon in the scale that was originally…

SysAdmin day fist bump!

I'm weak in this area also so I unfortunately don't have anything of value to add other than maybe some humor, but I really appreciate the awesome info. It's odd each time I read the topic title it makes that old AC/DC song start playing in my head,"For those about to rock we salute you".

I don't get why people are saying question 20 was hard, it was really straight forward to me. I read the question and thought I knew the answer, but as I really really want that speaker I wanted to make certain of it. After reading the comments section I got all paranoid and started over thinking it. If you're reading this…

We've had a lot of rapid growth in a short time with one conversion right after the other as we're buying up smaller businesses so its nearly impossible to know what we're going to need in the future. The method that we use though is we have a 3rd party consulting group that we purchase our VNXS's from and they help us…

We've had a similar issue with the battle over tools and shadow IT. One of the things that helped us was to create a share point site that lists all of the tools we currently use as well as their current version and a URL to access any web GUI it uses. We also instituted a weekly change management cycle that any changes…

That is awesome!

That solution would most definitely work but I hate getting emails all hours of the night unless it's something that I need to work on which is why I had to script that part out with powershell. I believe with SAM you can setup some component monitors to check the health of Orion but I'm not entirely sure if it still…

Yep that did it! Thank you so much. As always you're awesome. One piece of information that would have been helpful if anyone else is trying to do something similar to this. You can change the default name from AppStack Envrionment by going to the change lay out settings option in the Environment menu bar item. I had…

I was conflicted about that also. I missed the wager and lost 750 -_-' didn't take the question serious enough. Round 2 was a lot harder than the 1st one it seems.

The issue that we seem to encounter is the other departments that we work with will put in a request for us to spin up a VM using specs that a 3rd party says they need. We create the VM and after awhile when they experience an issue they say they need more resources, usually ram. There's been a couple instances involving a…

Oh, I see. I just figured that since this was brand new that they had not yet opened it up for posting aside from this to get feed back from all of us. Maybe gerardodada can respond and let us know?

Slow and steady definitely wins the race.

Gotta wait a week to place the order, then you will still have a month after the order has been placed for it to get processed and shipped is how it works I think. So it's going to be awhile.

I came in to this position with NPM already being implemented. I don't know what we would do without it though. We definitely are so much more proactive rather than reactive so it makes managing the huge infrastructure possible with a much a smaller team. Still get the occasional router or switch that takes a dive in the…

Sorry I've been swamped the past couple days. Well essentially the story was that we had a 3rd party that was doing security audits on the company but they didn't do any sort of penetration testing or any kind of testing for that matter. They would come in and ask the various departments what did they do and record the…

XKCD has a wonderful comic about this topic that I literally have printed out on my wall. xkcd: Password Strength

1. No, we have a group where we share our skill sets and teach each other. We all have roles that are our "Primary function" and those roles are our strengths but at the end of the day it doesn't matter what system is down it falls to our group to fix it. 2. For the most part we each have one certification for the thing we…

Maybe I'm missing something, but this doesn't seem like a big problem to me. Is there a reason why leveraging some flavor of 802.1x or another method of port based access control doesn't fix this? I mean I guess if it's not backed by a strong policy that only allows devices that meet a specific set of security requirements…

Daww I derped. Haven't made a solid week yet.

We're in the process of trying to decommission all of our 2003 servers right now. Folks don't want to give up their servers though and are making it hard on us. We told them a year ago this was going to happen but they're still trying to hold on to them. People get attached to their servers and name them like a pets.
