ICMP & SNMP are doing completely independant tests. The ICMP poll will show whether or not the device is reachable, while the SNMP poll will show (for example) the status of interfaces. So it is quite possible for a device to be showing as red and down while still reporting the detail of its interfaces, disks and services.…

received confirmation from support that "You are correct in your logic Robert. The baseline will still be done even when disabled...it will just be done during the initial poll. So disabling it will have no detrimental effects." I've disabled the option on our farm & will see how long Orion takes to become responsive on…

thanks dodo123 . I gave up with the GUI & used Richard's snippet which worked first time. & thanks to Richard for the snippet

I don't know what versions you are running, but if you start with the new NPM it will tell you if there are any module dependancies. Also there's a ReadMe in the ZIP ythat describes dependancies.

When we did the de-inst we also rebooted the entire complex. First the primary, then 5 additional engines and finally the web server and it's all been restarted again since then, but the messages continue.

I guess that it's a bit late now, but you could have restored your old backup database to an evaluation system & done some SQL queries to extract the missing data before adding it back into the live system. It's a bit messy, but that's what backups are for. Going forward, you're right, if old IPs and old names conflict…

It must have taken a few hours to construct all the SWQL for this one

RDP to the NPM v11 Primary Polling Engine, Do a Start > SolarWinds Orion > Documentation and Support > Orion Diagnostics At the bottom of the on the SolarWinds Diagnostics page select SolarWinds Active Diagnostics and then select whether you want all tests to run or just a single test - best to run all of them

Hi, Yes, the APM, as well as the other modules, are important to us, but the real problem is that most upgrades require the SQL to be idle, not just the poller being worked on, and so the entire Orion installation has to be stopped to protect the database. We recently upgraded APM 3.0 to 3.1 and had to take a one hour…

many thanks. that look great. going to try it out on my test rig asap

Hi aLTeReGo I'm getting Oops! This Page Doesn't Exist! on these links. Did they get moved?

Hi, Yes, I opened a ticket &, so far, it seems that either initial baselining is on or it's off. And if it's disabled, it will occur naturally after a few polling cycles anyway. So I've disabled it here. Our primary polling engine is a VM and so as the load has increased, we just threw a bit more resource at it.…

Its a totally different approach but - The wan side changes and that's a problem, but if you set each of the inside subnets differently (1st user has 192.168.1.0, 2nd user on 192.168.2.0 etc) & then you can monitor the more controllable insides.

Hi David, Not sure, but I'd vote it up. It would be useful in a multi-engine environment to permanently shift the additions away from the MPE, add another APE & then change it to a new default.

Hi, I've built up the text of alert mails using the Insert Variable > select a Variable Category & Select a Variable > Build Selected Variable, but it didn't include all of the fields that I need. Your query worked fine & did exactly what I wanted, but some of the fields you used are not listed. That's why I was asking…

If your Orion is built onto Win 2003 or Win 2008 then Orion will work OK. When you poll a bit of networking or server kit , it will issue a ping, then an SNMP query, and possibly much more, with additional modules. Even an old NT box as a target should give you some return. The older SNMP v1 will allow you to see much less…

Checking out the RC sounds like a great idea. Can you put me on the testers list please. Thanks Robert

Hi, It's not an agent, but it is a change to the target server & it should go through Change Control. When you see the "Let Orion Make The Changes to your target server" button there's another option to see the full instructions to manually do the change (and you could add these notes to the Change Request) (but it's so…

On the WCS & in the Controller Templates, you need to specify the NPM's IP address as well as the SNMP string. Then you apply this template to all your controllers.
-
Hi, Custom Properties can be used, per device or per interface, and you could display all of these custom properties in each device or interface screen & we do this too. There's a Custom Property Editor on your polling engine to cut'n'paste loads of data in quickly. But mostly, folk want an overview before the detail and…

Thanks guys, That makes sense. Perhaps I'll just build a report to extract the data in a standard sequence. Thanks again.

I can't be certain about the original request, but what I want to do is to have a collection of templates that I can create new users from. These would be used within one NPM instance. Listing/reporting all of the attributes of the any/all/specific users would also be a very useful from an audit perspective.

I completely agree. I use the primary as my test bed & then manually copy them over to the additional web server. DNS points our NOC to the additional web site so I get to make it look right first. It might get a bit messy with multiple extra web servers, but with just one extra it works fine for me. Don't forget to back…

The database can be backed up with Orion's Database Manager, but the old data will not be purged from the database until the Database Maintenance routine is run. Start > Programs > SolarWinds Orion > Advanced Features > Database Manager Add your SQL server and then drill down to your NetPerfMon database and select Database…

Once a node has been added to Orion it can trigger alerts and alerts can do all sorts of things. If you set up an alert to check whether the volume name has the string PAGE or SWAP or TEMP you can have an action which mutes all alerts for that volume. If the node name suggests that it is a router owned and managed by an…

If you set the How Would You Like To Set Up What To Monitor section to Automatically it will add all of the components on all of the nodes that it finds. The only exception is that you have to make a decision about whether to add everything Orion's discovery finds including those that respond only respond to a ping or not.…

Hi beeler4304, Settings > Network Discovery > Add New Discovery > and fill in the details eg - maybe a few IPs or a couple of subnets /24, /28 & a /30 for an entire small site, > add some credentials > and then at the bottom of the Monitoring Settings tab, set the How Would You Like To Set Up What To Monitor section to…

Hi, Just a couple of quick ideas. 1. You could install more NPM/APM primary servers at the remote sites and then use the Enterprise Operations Console to pull all the data together. You could do all the required tests with this option. 2. You could add additional engines to your existing primary polling engine and locate…

Sites are joined by interfaces, so I guess that you really need the normal traffic through a variety of specific interfaces. If you've added all of your routers and specified their interconnecting interfaces, you already have the information that you need, but perhaps cannot find it. I have drawn a Visio map overview of…

SNMP & NetFlow are two different technologies and one does not assume the other. You can check on the Cisco site which of their devices currently support NetFlow. You could then replace that router with a NetFlow capable router. Depending on your topology, there is another option. You could put a NetFlow capable device…
