In our place it feels like we are the Dungeon Masters but management won't let us see the playbooks. We still have to keep the servers safe from the rampaging orcs (users) but have to make it up as we go along. Used to play D&D at University. Some sessions would last a couple of days (with many beers and takeaway food).…

Jack Links don't sell the Breakfast Bacon in the UK but I have just finished a load of the Biltong that I bought at the Great British Beer Festival a few weeks ago. Nice stuff.

London SWUG is always good. Great to meet the nutters that make up the team. Food is always good too.

Unfortunately the answer to this question doesn't always fit in with corporate policy. We wouldn't assign a loaner PC first as management have said no. They would have to log a ticket with the helpdesk then wait for a site visit by a desktop person to investigate the issue. Third line would be dragged in if necessary. They…

Yep, many vendors have gone this route. Guess what. It's more expensive to us poor customers and we don't really see any benefits. It's just harder to manage.
-
So is WPM included or excluded. The hint still says both and I've had a really tough day.
-
The problem is that there are very few good managers. Most are clueless and have no idea of who knows what and who is doing what. I used to be constantly being told to stop working on one thing and to concentrate on another. I then get berated for not finishing the first thing fast enough. I now just ignore them and do…

Nothing wrong with Space 1999. Probably one of the best sci fi shows ever. I'm currently watching a re-run of the original Battlestar Galactica (probably the coolest space warship ever) and Buck Rogers in the 25th Century has Col. Wilma Deering. Need I say any more. Now, if you want strange try Sapphire and Steel.

Try a three fingered salute on a Linux box. Instant reboot, no "Are you sure". We have one guy who keeps forgetting. Problem is, he keeps doing it on the phone system.

If the NASA food thing isn't a late April Fool joke then it is huge. CO2 capture is seen as really important in the fight against global warming (climate change), where do we store what we capture and parts of the world don't have enough food. Seems like a WIN,WIN, WIN situation. If it is true and can be mass produced then…

It won't be used for good though. It will be used by big business to fleece everyone even more.

Really not sure about the 29th. The documentation clearly states that the Agent is installed as a part of the Platform Connect setup. Without the agent how does it communicate.
-
We need some walls otherwise the roof will fall on us.
-
What can we learn from the Capitol One hack. Big companies are really bad at security. Public cloud just makes stuff less secure. Management caused the issue by refusing to pay for stuff to be done properly but some scapegoat will be fired. Lessons have not been learned. Trust no-one and wear a tinfoil hat.
-
Another one I have signed up for. Always good to see how other people are securing stuff. It might not apply to here but it does show the thought processes and can spark ideas.

We monitor customers systems so aren't usually allowed to install agents. It can be difficult to even get them to allow SNMP configuration. It's the usual problem. They believe some garbage they read on the internet instead of the IT professional who actually knows what they are talking about.

Unique doesn't even come close. He also deleted everything in Solarwinds that was RED as "It obviously hasn't been set up properly". That included servers which were having issues and needed to be investigated urgently.
-
b. But I did have a customer recently who claimed I didn't know what I was doing because I wasn't using WMI to monitor a Linux system. Maybe he knows something NONE of the rest of us know. Good luck with the SCP. I'm supposed to get mine before the end of the year

In the market sector we operate in the words "Open Source" are really frowned on and don't even think of mentioning AI. Yet they are happy with Microsoft.
-
Unfortunately the requirement for an additional 25 licenses was because we didn't have 25 free licenses available.
-
Agreed. I just asked for a quote for an additional 25 licenses so we could monitor a small VMWare environment. Over £40,000. Apparently we need to buy a 250 license bundle. Not going to happen. The lunatics have taken over the asylum. I fear management will go with another vendor and Solarwinds will be dropped. We are…

I registered for London ages ago but still haven't heard back as to whether my registration has been approved. I need to get the time booked at work so can anyone let me know if I'm on the guest list (VIP obviously ).

Just hedging my bets in case they win.

Oh goody. The machines are in control. ........... And I welcome our robot overlords

I use custom properties to exclude certain servers from alerts during their automated nightly reboots too. I just couldn't be bothered to rewrite all the alerts so just muted the alerts on the servers which would mean they don't trigger the alerts. Changing some of the alerts created by previous IT people is a nightmare…
-
You could try the 'Unmanage Scheduling Utility' on the Solarwinds Server. That's what I used to mute alerts whilst scheduled server reboots happen every night.
-
https://documentation.solarwinds.com/en/success_center/sam/content/sam-windows-scheduled-task-monitor-sw2577.htm In case you haven't seen this. I've set scheduled task monitoring up in the past for just this requirement but don't work there any more so can't look at how I did it.
-
I don't have a Solarwinds cert but I do have 10+ years experience. With that I set up a client's Solarwinds solution over the last year with everything monitored, some alerts and reports and some dashboards. The next stage was a lot more alerts, reports and dashboards but they decided to employ someone to do it instead. He…

Don't edit a template. Copy it and edit the copy. That way you still have the original.

OK. Nobody panic but the SCP vouchers are back in the store.
