I think automation will just become more and more mainstream. We have fewer and fewer staff to look after an ever expanding set of IT systems. It is almost impossible to provide a good service without automating at least some of it. Monitoring is key. Here we are down to one Infrastructure Support Engineer (me) to support…

If the mapping feature is generating this much confusion maybe someone should talk to the designers. There is clearly a problem. It should be intuitive and not some sort of "dark art". That said, I think it has great possibilities.

Air marshals. Again, only a matter of time. They spend most of their time doing nothing (not that I'd want to do their job - I imagine it is quite stressful just waiting for something to happen and then have to react quickly, correctly and possibly deadly). I guess some beancounter decided they could use their 'spare' time…

Can't wait to see when you make a Fire Angel

D&D has taught me to "Think outside the box" which seems to be doing the rounds again in management speak. Fortunately it has also taught me that I can just cast a spell and kill the nasty IT manager. It needs a really big sword to sort out the head of IT though. Sometimes it's good to daydream. It has also shown me that…

768K Day. Now should I check with our network guys to see if they are aware or just wait to see what happens..

Yep. We have a global infrastructure with Domain Controllers on most sites. I want to put a couple of DCs in Azure and have the remote sites VPN to them, then take away the local DCs as they are getting on a bit. Problem is I can't get a price for what I want which I can use to forecast costs in 3 years time. Cloud could…

Teleporter. Would save me the 1.5 hour each way commute every time I go into the office. Would also replace the drunk taxi that seems to get me home from the pub but I would miss the kebab on the way.

Now that's a shame seeing all those Turkey legs going to waist (pun intended).

I think someone is having a breakdown.

Now, the Docker breach is much more of a story. There are some serious ramifications for this one as it could lead to further breaches depending on what was stolen.

Agreed. Looks like it is out by a whole day. Wish I'd looked on here first before searching for it. The hint doesn't point to anything useful that I could see.

I was excited about Thwackcamp until just before it started when, in spite of my calendar clearly stating that I was unavailable and was NOT to be disturbed, I was dragged kicking and screaming into a meeting I didn't need to be at and didn't contribute to. Nothing was achieved unless you call a bunch of useless 'waste of…

Interesting and I have frequently resorted to percussive maintenance on recalcitrant servers.

Good stuff in there. Problem we have had here in the past is that they would install all manner of monitoring tools, do half a job configuring them and sending out millions of useless alerts. I killed off most of the tools and consolidated with Solarwinds. I set up the monitoring correctly and removed the useless alerts.…

Robbed ! She is in Scotland. I'm surprises she isn't on the banks of the Loch up on bricks with her wheels missing.

That's what I do with any question where I'm not sure of the answer. I will only answer after the SW folks have had their say. Probably has something to do with me being a bit cautious and not just jumping in without pausing for a think. Have to be like that when looking after millions of pounds worth of highly visible IT…

Just about to put in VMWare NSX.

True but there are prizes to be won, points to be earned and there is that sense of achievement when you get everything right. Points and prizes. Its what we live for.

Saw Bowling for Soup a few weeks ago at Hammersmith Apollo. Great gig.

Yes.

Not really surprised about MoviePass losing money. The business model will lose money until you get a critical mass of people, enough so that not everyone goes to a movie every month. It's basically a pyramid scheme.

Who ?

I don't read work e-mails out of office hours. Monday mornings is for reading all the rubbish sent out at the weekend whilst having a coffee and talking nonsence with colleagues. Have to ease myself into the working week somehow.

Surely it's Nambia not Namibia. Donald Trump CAN'T be wrong. (Yes, I know, Don't call me Shirley)

You beat me to it. Here in the UK we specialise in having government ministers in charge of government departments ONLY if they have no idea what that department does. When they screw it up they just get rotated to another department that they know nothing about. It's a bit like Senior IT managers. Had one this morning who…

What will 10,000 steps get me. Further away and in need of new shoes. What I really need is for someone to "Gimme three steps". Lynyrd Skynyrd - Gimme Three Steps (Live) - YouTube

Inherited a basic "out of the box" install. Slowly working through it fixing stuff. Getting there.

Aliens. Maybe there are aliens out there but, as we live "Far out in the uncharted backwaters of the unfashionable end of the western spiral arm of the Galaxy" (thanks Douglas Adams), maybe they just aren't interested in visiting. Scientists would be better off trying to find intelligent life here on earth (assuming you…
