Of course it would have helped if the question hadn't been changed and if it hadn't been ambiguous. If we don't know what they are looking for it becomes very difficult to answer and guessing isn't in most of our psyche given we work in IT.

I've had to clean up cabling in so many companies it is now just second nature. When management see what the end up with they are amazed. Each cable is labelled at both ends and all the connections are documented (sometimes in software, sometimes in Excel). Correct cable lengths are used and cable management hardware runs…

ISO27001 External audit in 8 days here. Fingers crossed.

We run more than one. Sometimes one doesn't pick up the problem that another one does which justifies having more than one.

Mueller report. Knowing the technical abilities of bureaucrats I suspect they redacted the report by drawing on the CD with an indelible marker.

I call foul and we all get a free Anker portable charger.

Sometimes it is really annoying actually knowing what you are talking about. Got it "wrong" too. (Unhappy face).

I agree with you. What I was saying was that the business either don't want to listen or don't want to spend the money. You can explain until you are blue in the face and do it in really easy to understand terms but if they don't want to listen all you can do is wait until it all goes wrong then produce the documentation…

The best way for performance to be improved would be to get the software developers (or programmers as we used to be called when I was a programmer) to do their job properly. Now everything is rushed with impossible deadlines and limited testing. That just leads to poorly performing applications. I wrote some software for…

The only problem with automating everything is that you could do yourself out of a job (or lose it to someone with a lower skillset as all the difficult stuff has been done for them). I'm all for automation and look forward to the day where I just surf the internet behind some glass that says "In case of emergency break…

Had to tell my boss so I could claim the overtime.

There's a great way to stop people stealing corporate data. Pay them a decent wage and treat them well. It really isn't rocket science.

Q1 should be page 12 not page 10.

Thanks for owning up to this. It did look suspicious that the post was edited and the original poster was denying it. Apologies to the original poster if I caused any offence but I think we can all see why it looked bad. I understand you were just trying to help. I would still recommend that the documentation used in the…

Are you sure Unmanaging removes all historic data. I was under the impression it just stopped the collection of data whereas deleting the node removes the historical data.

Very thin margins with me. I don't pay for delivery. I wait until I want enough stuff to qualify for free delivery then wait the 3 - 5 days for delivery.

IBM and VMWare. We are currently running away from IBM as fast as possible. Their service is really bad and very expensive. We are bringing it in house first and will then look at moving some stuff to Azure, some to AWS and some to hosted data centres. Whatever fits best. Just no IBM after 5 years of pain.

Would have been nice to see some real world examples instead of some fluffy statements and generalisations. This was probably the most disappointing session (or I didn't understand what it was intended to be).

There is this mad French bloke who just flew over the English Channel on a jet powered hoverboard. Watch: Frenchman successfully crosses Channel on 'hoverboard' in second attempt | Euronews

They did that here and decided that about 200 role based accounts should be deleted. I urged caution (i.e. disable them for a while to see what broke but did they listen - NO). Cue chaos as all sorts of scheduled tasks, scripts, backup jobs and applications failed. We are still fixing problems. Fortunately they did keep a…

That's an extremely poorly worded question. If you were trying to trick someone you couldn't have done a better job. You should be ashamed.

Tesla. I'd imagine there is some truth in both stories but the big corporate is doing the usual and jumping all over the little guy. No matter what happens they will lose reputation. They should have addressed the guys concerns and thanked him for his help.

Oh no. AI in the cloud where it can expand uncontrollably, reach sentience and create T-100 terminators

I'm not sure you CAN win Wabbott or Brett. Definitely different prizes.

At grammar school in the 70's we had to chose our 'O' level subjects. There was a new one called Computer Studies. I was going to do the sciences anyway so thought it might be fun. Day one of 4th year (1st year of 'O' level) the teacher introduced himself. He had worked at NASA on the moon landings on the IT side of…

Had an interesting two weeks in Germany travelling around British Army bases doing upgrades to the radio stations. We went through two hire cars because of the Autobahns. I feel the need, the need for speed.

Absolutely. I remember one comedian who was visiting his American relatives and saying he would "Lay the table". The response was "Mind the knife drawer".

Users are definitely part of the problem. We have just had one phished who entered their Active Directory username and password into a website they linked to from an e-mail because they thought they were winning something from a restaurant chain. How could they possibly think that was OK.

Beer. I have Friday off to go to the Great British Beer Festival at Olympia in London. Over 900 real ales, craft beers, ciders and perries all under one roof. Should get as messy as usual.

I'd settle for hearing whether I have been 'approved' or not. No one at Solarwinds appears to be responding to my messages.
