It seems like the only way to avoid the extremes is to collect all or most logs and then filter. You can avoid drowning but your still at risk of throwing the baby out with the bath water. You can add groups to maps with the Network Atlas. I don't know how well it translates to World Map.

I have to agree with byrona about keeping documentation CURRENT. I've seen some real train wrecks because old, out of date documentation got used and set the IT group back by several days work.
