Thanks. I worry about what happens with this stuff fails. I know communications have always been critical in conflicts throughout history. Makes me wonder if we've gone too high tech when everyone a systems expert.

Many years ago I worked for a Cable network. I was the rookie on the team and there was one sysadmin that was the bosses favorite - got all the training, etc. We'd acquired a spiffy new high dollar Novell server (Netframe) that was installed by some high dollar consultants and this sysadmin and no one else knew anything…

Interesting post. Thanks. Automation is definitely a force multiplier.

* How important is APM to your job?* Very important. Everything we do as an IT shop has a customer somewhere, be it internal or external. Making sure those customers are well served is our highest priority. * How does it impact and benefit your business overall?* Overall it has a significant impact. I can't think of a…

Good post, thanks. Looking forward to the rest of the series.

Very thought provoking post @"adatole". For me there were a bunch of jobs. Bagging groceries working for tips (the best tippers aren't the ones driving the nice cars). The time I got fired from a night job (lasted about 2 weeks as well), I learned that I could do the work but working 11pm to 7am wasn't for me. My first…

Thanks for the post. Love the graphics!

Kind of weird when you get it wrong and selected the items that they said they were looking for.

Thanks for the post. A lab environment is definitely a great idea to get hands on with the technology and learn the ropes before you start working in a live environment.

I'd forgotten about MySpace. Apparently they were happy to forget their customer's data as well. Unfortuanately you don't find out about these sorts of things until it's too late.

Thanks for the post. Virtualization has indeed come a long way since we first started. It will be interesting to see where it heads going forward. I look forward to the rest of the series.

Not sure what a Database Flux Capacitor might do, but I want one!

As always, thanks for the interesting links. Always look forward to these. As a long time Oracle customer (back to 5.x on OS/2 incredibly enough) I had to smile at the post re: Amazon dumping Oracle. There are a lot of us that would love to. The "Hotel California" licensing model gets really old.

Yep yep. No one ever calls to say "just wanted to let you know everything is peachy and just wanted to say thanks!"

So true. There are definitely frustrations, but I've never had a moments doubt that this was the career for me. Just wish there were less politics so I could fix more stuff.

As always, thanks for the great links.

Love DPA. We got it about 1.5 years ago. We used it to solve a nagging Oracle performance problem less than 2 weeks after getting it (that we couldn't see with Grid Control). We're in it all day every day. Great product.

As always, thanks for a bunch of interesting links. Love the pic. Merry Christmas to you as well sqlrockstar.

Thanks. Always interesting to hear what's going on in that space.

I'm on 2017.3.4

Sounds like an interesting series. Looking forward to it. Thanks!

Ditto your comment on the trade shows. I can bypass about 90% using that basic filter, and spend time on what really matters. That said as an earlier comment noted, swag can and does lure me in occasionally.

Great link on the machine learning thing - one of the better non-technical explanations I've seen. Way too many people think it's black magic and can do anything.

As always, thanks for a bunch of great links.

Really looking forward to Thwack Camp. I had no idea how early you all started on it, but given how great it is (and it gets better every year) I should have guessed. Thanks for all the time and effort you put into it. As always, thanks for a bunch of interesting links. Croquet article was especially interesting.

We moved to Exchange Online, Office 365, hyperconverged VM platform (VxRail) and started using Docker (which lead to deciding we didn't need it yet), also piloting an all flash Oracle database platform. Fun year.

Thanks for sharing. For years the biggest gripe I had about Windows was the lack of a really robust and useful scripting language. You can get so much accomplished so much more quickly than by clicking and navigating through a bunch of windows. It really is transformative.

ditto. i always right click and open in new tab.

Oh Boy! This is awesome! Love it. Thanks!

Glad to hear you all are continuing to invest in database monitoring/performance tools. I looked at Confio Ignite years ago but the cost was prohibitive for my organization at the time. Years later when we got Orion I took a look at DPA and realized it was Ignite immediately. Love it.
