  • I guess the larger picture for Solarwinds is LEM handles logs, NTA handles flow. curtisi While I understand this approach, this will continue to limit LEM as a SIEM solution when compared to just about everything else on the market. LEM is presented as a stand-alone SIEM solution so your audience is going to compare it as…
  • I am still struggling to get the Topology discovery stuff to work. I added a new switch, and added it to Orion. To try and capture Topology data on it and it's connected devices I did a discovery on just the IP of the switch and set it to go 1 hop out. I then imported the results of the discovery. After doing this I still…
  • There is a SW post in Thwack suggesting some of the Syslog/Trap stuff that they are currently working on...
  • Yeah, formatting for reports can be tricky, glad you were able to get it working. No I didn't download the MIB, I used the MIB Browser that is part of the SolarWinds Engineers Toolset and found what I needed when I was setting this all up. The specific OID I use is 1.3.6.1.4.1.9.9.92.1.1.1.2.1 Hope this helps!
  • Yes, the SolarWinds Product Managers are very active in the forums as well as their Forum Managers. This is also a very strong community so if you have any questions posting them here will typically get you quick responses.
  • That seems to work. For sure it gets the job done to tell us which VMs are using the wrong storage on the SAN. Thanks! Glad to hear that. If you want to sort the data you can always export it to Excel or add a Where clause at the end of the SQL Statement to look for only specified things.
  • I think this is a great thread with good info. Non-admin users shouldn't have access to your database in the first place so I don't see a security concern.
  • Just curious if you guys have any idea when this issue might be resolved?
  • Wow, responses from three SW employees, I feel special! Thanks to you all for your responses, I will go ahead with the work around if I need this implemented immediately, if my team changes their mind I will wait until it's more easily implemented. Thanks again!
  • we are using 10.1, the latest. if you know of a way to change these via the web, I'm all ears. There is no way to do this via the web, I am personally not familiar with they way that you are doing on on a graph by graph basis. I was just wanting to make sure and point out that SolarWinds is moving in a direction away from…
  • It seems the purpose of the MaxBytes capability of MRTG is to throw out any values that are above the maximum possible value to make sure that your data is accurate? If this is the case what is the cause of these inaccurate values in the first place? The only time I have encountered problems with interface data is due to…
  • I appreciate the information provided. Unfortunately, any MIB not in the natural polling engine, will get read by the universal device poller, but that's it. Data is read and displayed. One can not get manipulated data like max/average CPU usage for the day, max/average memory usage for the day, peak/average utilization…
  • Thanks for this info and the suggested tools, very helpful!
  • Ok wait a minute. All that did was create a new custom property. Where do I go to control the alerts the actual alerts. All I want to do is make certain nodes not send a "node down" alert until it had been down for 30 minutes. You need to have the property first so that you have something unique for the specific group of…
  • Wow, glad I ran across this thread. I am having this same problem with a report that I recently created. I have a support case open on it right now (Case #143766). Unfortunately the support tech I have been working with seems to be struggling with my issue and now it's been a week since I have heard from him.
  • Ok, I have done this before and am familiar with the process. Once that is done am I able to search, create rules, etc in all the same ways as I can with the normalized data? P.S. You need to get the forum managers to hook you up with an "Staff" badge so folks know you work for SW.
  • For the record, this is a feature we are really looking forward to. Any time frame on when the next release will be available? End of year, beginning of next year?
  • Thanks for the info, that makes good sense and will likely be the model we need to use as well if/when we implement LEM internally.
  • Byron, your post was from 2009, - has it been on the radar since 2009? That is correct; however, in defense of SolarWinds I imagine that this is something that is on the higher level of difficulty to implement and I have not seen a lot of people requesting this be fixed. SolarWinds directs their development efforts toward…
  • So I would give you a few bits of advice there... Take the time to learn a bit of SQL, I didn't know SQL either until I started managing monitoring systems. The best book to use for this is HERE. The Orion database is pretty easy to work with considering I was able to figure it out and I don't know much about SQL. As far…
  • Anachornism At this point I am not sure I understand what it is that you are frustrated with? Going back to your original post, it seems like you should be able to do your upgrade with minimal downtime, is this not the case? Also, SolarWinds understands where their problems are and are working to resolve them, it seems…
  • How come I don't get anything (OID not supported) when I use the UCD MIB to pull disk IO stats from our Windows 2003 server? Does that mean that windows does not support disk IO stats? Thanks. UCD is for Linux systems and is not supported by Windows. If you want to use SNMP to monitor Windows Disk I/O you will need to use…

  • I don't deny that it's already a powerful and configurable tool; however, I don't think that justifies product complacency and lack of continuous improvement. SolarWinds has always been about community driven continuous product improvement (which is one of the reasons we heavily utilize their tools) and reporting is a…
  • I noted a possible feature for LEM that would provide the additional flexibility... Provide a development environment with a documented Regular Expression to allow users to create their own LEM connectors for Syslog. I picture it something like UnDP tool for NPM.
  • I can't switch to LEM. We just finished evaluating it for this customer engagement and it's not flexible enough. Because it uses connectors to normalize data it isn't designed to look at any potential syslog which would include custom applications logging to syslog. We need to be able to potentially look at any and all…
  • That is a good thought; however, I am pretty sure this isn't a polling cycle discrepancy. I have VMAN polling at the same 5 minute interval that Orion is polling and the data that VMAN shows is consistent with vCenter while Orion is significantly different. I am probably going to be opening a SolarWinds support ticket on…
  • That is really bad for us as I have a few other issues that I need to resolve and SW Support has told me that I need to upgrade to fix them.
  • I could REALLY use the ability to alert on traps and syslogs with the advanced alerting engine The issue here is that the Advanced Alerting engine only works for stateful alerts. Syslogs and Traps are not stateful, they are just events that happen. You can send alerts based on traps and syslogs. We send all alerts from…
  • I would like to chime in on this issue. 1) A unified Alert interface is very desireable; 2) Being able to generate NPM Events for SYSLOG/SNMP Alerts is important for us (and should be trivial to add). Thanks, A little bird told me that something sorta/kinda/resembling this may be available in the next version. = )
  • Awesome, thanks Michal, can't wait to hear it! I am probably more excited about this than any of the new features in the last year.
