I can't emphasize enough how important this feature is, and how shocked I am that it's been 5 months and still no update. Honestly - how hard would it be to port the same code you use to show "interfaces" and pull the data from the volumes table? You guys took so much heat for the CPE transition, why is something this…

Fantastic. Can't wait to hear about your progress!

This is a great perspective - do you NEED certifications - which Dez and I discussed in the lab episode, and which I'll be covering in a later installment for sure!

If you are going to dream, dream big: Fully certified, two-way integration with all the major vendors, so that when SolarWinds sends an alert into the ticket system it gets the ticket number back. Then the alert engine has an option so that if a ticket is already open for the same alert, same element, a new alert/ticket is…

Great article, and a very thought-provoking plan. I asked a colleague of mine who has worked on VoIP systems for... well, a really REALLY long time - someone who still is actively involved in major rollouts of VoIP products for multiple clients - and their list included: * Active Directory. Is it clean? Is the info real?…
-
I'll accept it. Email me at leon.adato@solarwinds.com so we can sync up on tickets and logistics.

Actually, that (a post on how to create this view) has already been done: Creating the Network Troubleshooting View We've also updated our live demo site to show this same view in action: http://oriondemo.solarwinds.com/Orion/SummaryView.aspx?ViewID=527

You can do this with a set of SNMP-based Universal Device Pollers (UnDP). They would collect the running processes every xx minutes. If you start at hrSWRun (1.3.6.1.2.1.25.4) you'll find the specific OIDs you need. Collect several, display as a table, and you'll have the data collected in the database for reporting.

There are at least a couple other feature requests for this vendor. You might want to add your support to those instead of starting a new one:

Guilty as charged - Cleveland born and bred (although I keep moving away and coming back throughout my career). And we've got PLENTY of snow here for you these days. Feel free to swing by and pick some up and take it with you.

If you have junior monitoring folks, you may also want to take a look at this: Monitoring 101

Hey @"Radioteacher" I just noticed your keyboard. Please note my current setup: My question is how you're connecting it to modern PC equipment. Mine is the Sun 5c with a mini-DIN connector. I have carried this around with me for years as I love, Love, LOVE the responsiveness. Not super clacky like the IBM AT keyboards, but…

That's high praise coming from you, sir! I would also like to see this. Any takers?

There is a reason I'm not a "real" programmer - I don't have the patience for the dog's work of generating thousands of lines of code, of fine-tuning the logic structures, of the realities of refactoring the job requires. Those are the same reasons I'll never be a finish carpenter. I'll happily throw together a bunch of…

^^^^^THIS^^^^^ If you want just ONE reason - and a compelling one at that - for IT folks to take more seriously the task of learning to speak the language of business, to frame our important tech work in language our know-nothing non-technical managers can understand, it's THIS. If we continue to fail to learn (or worse,…

And that's how it ought to be! I'm willing to bet this comment may get you more than one request of "can you show me how to do it at my company"? And I hope that helps everyone avoid the more horrific aspects of Changes. But in the meanwhile, GET YOUR ORION UPGRADE SCHEDULED!! ;-)

Agreed on all counts, and thank you for coming to Dad's defense (although he really doesn't need it. At 80 the man can still hold his own when we start taking digs at each other. TRUST ME. Plus, he has all those years of naked baby pictures and "remember when you were 3 and thought you could marry the dog" stories to fall…

I understand your point, but I think there's a couple of nuances here: First: failURE is a possible outcome, regardless of how one feels about it. HOWEVER what *is* optional, what is within our ability to choose are things like: * accepting failure as a reason to stop trying * acting in an irresponsible manner, making…

Are you saying that MS-SQL is built into the image, or that it's explicitly NOT in the image and part of setting up the OVA is pointing it to your database server? I would vote for the second option, but not the first.

The one and the same. It was such a fun conversation, and such an engaging idea, that I had to do a write-up about it. I'm glad that it got the creative juices flowing over on your side as well.

For all the semi-obsessive test-takers out there who REALLY like the endorphin rush of the green checkmarks, I would also point out that the Head Geeks are all alive, and well, and online. Don't know the answer? Pop open another tab in your browser and shoot us a message! @"patrick.hubbard" @"sqlrockstar" @"adatole"…

I believe the techno-philosephy Daryl Singletary said it best: It's like too much money, there's no such thing It's like a girl too pretty with too much class Being too lucky, a car too fast I ain't never been too much geek. Ok, I tried.

As a matter of fact...

You bring up a good point - sometimes switching tools simply isn't an option. And in those cases, you do what all IT Pros do - you MAKE IT WORK. It's great that you can and it's the right choice. But there comes a point when the "make it work" (along with the lack of functionality) costs more than any imagined savings.…

In every company I've been at, the salesperson said I could buy a test/dev license for 50% of the list price. So I would buy the smallest license of whatever I needed (NPM 150, SAM 200, etc) and set it up on a VM using the local (SQLExpress) database option. It was usually well within my company's ability to do that.

@"mjperkins" I note with interest that arak, ouzo, sambuca, and pastis all arrive at the same destination (more or less) by vastly different routes. * Sambuca uses a grain alcohol like ethanol or moonshine, anise, elderberry, sugar, and water. * Ouzo also starts with a pure grain alcohol (although many start with vodka),…

Just adding my voice to the chorus. This (meaning high-volume trap and syslog processing capability) has GOT to improve. I bought 4 licenses of Kiwi for just that purpose, only to find out that I couldn't really process traps effectively. I needed to be able to process and forward them *as traps*, but it turns out you can…

Agreed! Duly noted and thanks for letting us see the view from your cube!
