Reminds me of (possibly the my only) favorite part of the original "Civil War" series: Meanwhile, thanks for the input. Adding it to the pile.

I'll hit the on-call issue in part 3, but here's the upshot: No, I have NOT always had companies that were supportive. One manager looked me in the eye and said "your religion is YOUR problem to solve, not mine." The majority are more supportive than that, although the levels of "begrudging" vary. Remember, for *me* this…

As far as I can tell, it's up and people are commenting on it.

I believe the word he used means "seal" phoque - Wiktionary

Back in 1995, when "casual Fridays" was still something special, I started working for a company that invented and produced motion control solutions (think "the software and hardware that makes factory conveyor systems work"). Because they employed almost exclusively engineers, and because sales happened in a whole other…

Downvoting this one, sorry. All of these logfiles are needed by SolarWinds techs to get an accurate picture of your polling engine. Having the user leave them out will only create confusion and rework for the SolarWinds support staff.

We should talk - you, me, kong.yang, sqlrockstar... heck, probably the whole HeadGeek crew (patrick.hubbard, Dez). I'm sure we could come up with some awesome ideas.

VERY NICE!! You get 10,000 Leon points (not as useful as thwack points, but still fun to collect) and the ticket will be put back in the hopper!

I'm all ears! Feel free to post here or email me directly.

Fantastic! Allonz-y!

"only" 17 pollers here, but yes - having the ability to push updates from the primary poller to each of the additionals makes *a lot* of sense.

Agreed. Lazy habits (monitoring "needs" root/admin on everything; security "needs" everything locked down) exacerbate the issue. Combined with thinking in absolutes like always/never, must/can't, etc it's easy to see how bad blood builds up. Like Charisse (c1ph3r_qu33n) and I discussed was that WE (ie: the members of…

Mind? I'm honored and flattered. Use away!

It's never gonna happen, but I liked your comment anyway. A guy can dream...

thwack_Scrabble word bonus for using "AppStack" in a sentence!

I'll pass it along to DanielleH and Cara Prystowski to see what they think!

This makes me feel SO MUCH better! I really thought my obsessive focus on points was reaching a point where medical intervention would be necessary. At least I know i'm not the only inmate in this asylum!

While it's not a solution, I should mention that this technique does work well, regardless of the source of the alert (NPM, SAM, VNQM, etc: http://thwack.solarwinds.com/message/143008

I'm glad that week 1 gave lots of people reason to think. I'm happy to follow up with where my head was at, what real-world experience went into the clues, and why I thought the right answers were "right". Or why the wrong answers were wrong.

I used to take one of those from my job at ExecuTrain to teach Lotus 1-2-3 at one of the local banks. It was only "portable" if you were the American Tourister gorilla.

Christopher Good You bring up some passionate, if not compelling, ideas. I wanted to say that my following suggestion IN NO WAY minimizes your (and other folks) strong feelings. That said, I'd like to point out that Thwack MVP's get a FREE copy of every single SolarWinds product. It's the smallest license count, but it's…

Is the user account option for timing out after inactivity not working? Just curious.

What struck me about today's theme was the wishfulness and wistfulness, but also the hopefulness of looking forward. "When this is over" has, at it's heart, the acknowledgement that "Some day, soon, this WILL all be over." We can see it; picture ourselves in it; plan for the time when it arrives. If that doesn't capture…

Just saying, I had NOTHING to do with this weeks' questions. Don't drive me into a wall (again).

Heh. "cooler" days in Cleveland are a little more like:

Muchas Gracias! Y escribiré un otro blog despues decir como fue.

all good. The thing you are missing by NOT sending syslog from splunk into Orion is the correlation between a syslog event and other observable poll-able events. The whole "oh, this happened, and then THIS happened and then... wow. That escalated quickly." insight. And I'd be remiss if I didn't point out that - SEIM…
