You bring up great points. As my buddy sqlrockstar likes to tease me, "Linux is only free if your time is worthless". And yes, when I invoked the "F" word, it was only related to the software cost. But also that the new (and hopefully valuable) features contained therein - features which have the potential to allow you to…

I have a LOT of feelz about black swans (here and here, for example) that aside, however, you bring up a good point about not knowing what matters until after it matters. Which is why I elaborated on the design here:…

Maybe I'm being dense, but how is this different than monitoring the up/down status of the interface itself? We have (you guessed it, it is ME after all) a custom property for each interface that indicates whether we want an alert for up/down status or not (actually, it's a dropdown that lists WAN, CELL, UPLINK, and…

What you are really talking about is linking SolarWinds to your change management system. Which is a HUGE can of worms. I'm not saying it's not worth doing, I'm just saying it's bigger than you are describing here. For example, what if it is INTENTIONALLY patched and rebooted, but 3 hours earlier than expected? In one…

For those who would like the COMPLETE story of the hospital outage, I posted it over on my personal blog: The Cost of (not) Monitoring. I think it is illustrative of how a false sense of economy can have a huge (negative) impact on the bottom line.

Does this report help? Note that you have to monitor the poller in order for it to show up in the report, but otherwise, CPU, RAM, etc is in there.

Just finished a 35 minute "Intro to SolarWinds" video for my internal staff. I'll need to review it to make sure I don't give away any corporate secrets and then I'll either post it or create a "sanitized" version.

I'm going to jump in here an shamelessly promote our last SolarWinds lab episode where we dig deep into the new version of NTM. You can watch it on YouTube here: Interactive Visual Network Discovery with NTM and EOC How-To - SolarWinds Lab #23 - YouTube My personal take-away from this version is that network mapping with…

I think my only reason for going this route was because there was a report already in-place, and it's easy to create a view with a report to push to a NOC screen. However, now that the SWQL logic is all there, creating a custom resource as a table or SWQL object isn't much of a leap, is it?

No, that was ONE session "Yoga and SDN". My network backbone still hasn't recovered.

The person to ask is Steven Klassen. He does a great job of de-mystifying MIBs and OIDS in about 15 minutes. Also, a great utility that nobody knows about (but you get for free with NPM is the snmpwalk.exe tool. You'll find it in the main NPM program directory.

NICE! Points will be coming once DanielleH and/or wabbott get back from Microsoft Ignite.

Can't tell if that's visicalc or supercalc.

I find it EXTREMELY interesting that after 24 hours, 14 comments, and 200+ views, there's still only one example that has real metrics. So I'm going to add to tinmann0715's example with 2 of my own, and DOUBLE DOG DARE YOU to give me some of your own examples. Just to make it worth your while, I'm putting 3,000 thwack…

there are a few SAM templates in the content exchange (most authored by aLTeReGo) that do this.

I wish I had days left to assign for lead writers, but they went fast and are all claimed at this point. But the comments section is yours - feel free to post YOUR message to your younger self on any day that works for you.

Follow me on Twitter (@LeonAdato) and you can see every mouth-watering image. Oh, you wanted more than food? I've got that too.

My problem with this idea is that in large environments, some nodes can only belong to certain pollers (DMZ, remote site, etc) and some are BEST polled by engines closer to them (dual data center). So having automated load balancing would also require the ability to set up load balancing groups, rules, spheres, etc. I'm OK…

If you're already registered, you won't see the "registration" button. If you AREN'T registered, the banner at the top will look like this:

I am also much closer to the end of my career than the beginning (well, if you consider the usual retirement age. Like my father, a lifelong musician, I plan to keep working until I can't see the notes on the page any more. For more nuggets of his wisdom, see here: What Makes an IT Professional? ). So I understand how you…

If it sounded like I was trying to be a roadblock, then I apologize. Actually the opposite. I'm trying to help clarify the issue you are trying to voice. It certainly can't be "we want a free license for any use we want, no questions asked". So back to my email - what are the cost thresholds and what are the use cases? One…

Well, you can definitely run both sessions at the same time, but remember that all sessions are recorded, and will be posted after the live event so you can re-watch your favorite parts, share with coworkers, and just bask in the glow of all that knowledge you gained. Of course, being there live is best so you can ask your…

Nope. All cars can fly several times. It's the landing that usually ruins the chances of second flight.

The Head Geeks ( patrick.hubbard sqlrockstar & kong.yang) went back and reviewed our 2015 PRO-dictions (you can find it here: The 2015 Top Ten IT Pro-Dictions ) and we think we're closer to about 80%. Look for a review video coming soon.

While it's a blog post (or 3) of it's very own, I took some steps toward smart home technology and automation (I hinted at this previously: https://thwack.solarwinds.com/t5/Geek-Speak-Blogs/Writing-Challenge-Day-8-My-New-Hobby-Lessons-Learned/bc-p/612306/highlight/true#M36559 ). That said, what I've really focused on more…

As people who have made our career in IT, data drives our decisions. It is often the way we best understand the world around us. And, I've found, it's a source of clarity, if not comfort. For some, seeing the daily COVID-19 statistics creates a rise in anxiety. For me, at least, knowing them gives me something tangible to…
