You could detatch the database from the current cluster and attach it to the new, but you can certainly do it the way the DBA recommends, too.

The Release Notes document that SQL 2008 is supported beginning with 9.5. You can see the history of releases there, too, under Features in Previous Versions.

Could you please post a little more detail about what steps you're taking and what's happening? At what point is the crash occurring?

Are they displaying as "unknown" devices? If so, add them to the list here.

The Orion NPM Fixes section of the release notes lists what's been fixed and updated from 8.5.1 through current. Note that we only list a few versions back, but that will get you a large part of what you're looking for.

What happened when you clicked Start > All Programs > SolarWinds Orion > Map Maker?

Did you rerun the configuration wizard? What things from the forum did you try? This will help narrow down where the issue might be.
