  • The Orion version of Network Performance Monitor runs as a service. The Engineer's Edition version of Network Performance Montior does not run as a service.
  • Dan, You need to select something to export first. In this case, select a View from the toolbar (or create a new view). The export selections will then be available.
  • Yes, SQL Server is an option for the Engineer's Edition of SysLog Server to support SQL Server. This is an unsupported feature. Send a note to Development@SolarWinds.Net and request the SQL Server extensions for the Engineer's Edition SysLog Server.
  • Lars, Sounds like those devices are not supported. It pretty straight forward to add new device templates. Call SolarWinds Support (918-307-8100) and ask to speak with Josh. He can help you with adding device templates.
  • The configs are there and they have data in them. The file extension reference is broken. It is openeing Notepad.exe, but leaving off the filename. So... notepad is opening with a blank document. You need to reassociate that file with notepad. This problem has been fixed in the next release.
  • kleins, You could use the "Summary Page", but I also think that may be too limiting for what you need. Try this.... Open the SWNetPerfMon.cfg file with Microsoft Access. You can then query the NetPerfMon database directly and generate any kind of report you need. The "Interfaces" table will give you the current statistics…
  • kleins, How about using Network Performance Monitor and monitoring the traffic through each switch port. That will give you top talkers in many different formats.
  • There is no software limit to the number of Nodes or size of network that can be managed. The only limitation is your network bandwidth and PC's resources. SolarWinds has customers with HUGE networks (NATO, Air Force, MCI Worldcom) that routinely discovery all or a portion of the network without any problem. If you are…
  • Yes, Windows 2003 is fully supported by Orion Network Performance Monitor. There are differences in the way Web sites and COM+ components are managed, but the Orion Configuration Wizard takes care of all the Windows 2003 specifics.
  • Not within the Network Monitor in the Engineer's Edition. The Network Performance Monitor in the Engineer's Edition has this capability. You should also take a look at the Orion Network Performance Monitor. Download a copy from here support.solarwinds.net/.../New-Customer.cfm
  • Percent Memory Utilization within Orion NPM is based on real memory AND swap space. If a device has 100MB of memory and is using 90MB, then the percent memory used will be reported as 90%. If it is using 100MB, then percent memory used will be reported as 100%. However, if the device is using 100MB of memory (all of it)…

  • Mithrilhall, "Customize Menu Bars" is an Advanced option. Login in as Admin on the web site, select "Admin" from the menu and then select "Settings" from the Admin menu on the left. Change "Allow Advanced Customization" to "YES". The "Customize Menu Bars" will now be available.
  • SolarWinds new Cirrus Configuration Management can be setup to pull configs on a scheduled basis. You can download a free eval from http://SolarWinds.Net
  • Alex, Yes. Orion can monitor processes and their respective CPU and memory usage. Contact SolarWinds Support and ask for a pre-release of the Orion Application Monitor extension for Orion. This polling engine will monitor Processes, CPU Load and Memory used and keep historical statistics of each. It can also log Events…
  • Version 7.x fully supports Windows 2000, XP Pro, and 2003. As of 12/16/2003 there is only one known issue on Windows 2003. When installed on a Windows 2003 server with high Mhz multiple processor (4+ cpu) configuration, COM+ will sometimes stop functioning and cause maps to stop rendering. This problem was identified on a…
  • Those are great suggestions. I'll submit them to the development group. Thanks !
  • Network Guru, I'm very sorry about the switch descriptions. Obviously we misunderstood what you were asking for. CAT OS Switch port descriptions should be available in version 7.1. They are working on all the Catalyst switches in our labs (and Cisco labs). Can you send the information directly to me at…
  • Ian, Are you asking "Can Orion be configured to use the Loopback IP address" ? If so, then the answer is yes. The polling engine was specifically designed for this situation. Either add the device using the Loopback IP Address, or right click on the device from within "System Manager" and select Node Details. Then change…
  • If you are asking "Can the right-click feature within the Orion web site be customized", then the answer is yes. If you are asking "Can the right-click feature within the System Manager be customized", then the answer is not in Orion V7 (Orion V8 will include this feature). To customize the right-click (Toolset…
  • Bryan, Do you have any more details on what does not work. Does Cirrus stop functioning or the Alert Engine ? What is the error message ?
  • Rasool, Adding an abitrary SNMP OID is not possible at this time. This requires the much requested "Custom SNMP Poller". This is currently in development.
  • The description, contact, and location fields are discovered from the monitored device. If you change them within Orion, they will be overwritten with the device information during the next discovery. To change them permanently, you will need to change them on the managed router, switch, server, etc. Also.... many people…
  • Try *respond* instead
  • Eric, I now understand what you are needing. You want an Account to view all nodes with Customer #ABC AND all Interfaces with Customer #ABC. I setup a test server to try and discover a solution for this issue. But I struck out. The problem is ... Account limitations will only show objects that match ALL limitations. Let's…
  • evt, I'm not sure I understand your question.... If you want to limit an Account to a group of Nodes AND a group of Interfaces, add more than one limitation to the Account. For example, when editing the Account click on "Add Limitation" and add a Group of Nodes. Then click on "Add Limitation" again and select "Group of…
  • Excellent question !! If you add the Orion Version 8 Alert Engine to an Orion Version 7 installation, you will now have 2 Alert Engines. The version 7 will continue to function as always. The version 8 will also be available (via a different user interface). There is no Alert migration in the pre-release version.... your…
  • quote:Originally posted by CCrew Still no hooks into the Application Management pack? -Roger Download and install the latest Application Monitor release. It should include extensions for the Orion V8 Alert Engine.
  • Keep in mind, this is a "pre-release", not the final release. On the macros .... we will probably be adding a Macro Builder feature to the actions. The supported Macros in the new engine are far, far more advanced than the previous version. The new set of Macros can be as simple as the current set, or as complex as…
  • The database structure is different, but you should be able to backup the old V6 database, restore it to the new server, and then run the Orion Configuration Wizard. The Config Wizard will automatically upgrade the V6 database to the V7 structure. The Configuration Wizard is installed as part of Orion.
