Migrating OnPremise Solarwinds Polling Engine to Azure

I wanted to know what’s the caveats and the supportability perspective when migrating the OnPremise Solarwinds Orion Platform as VM into Azure VM ?

My current setup is:

DataCentre 1

1x Main Polling Engine (Orion Platform HF4, SRM, DPAIM, SAM HF4: 2020.2.6)

1x SQL Server Database for Solarwinds

DataCentre 2

1x Additional Polling Engine Server

DataCentre 3

1x Additional Polling Engine Server

The plan is to migrate them all into each individual Azure VM using https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/migrate/tutorial-migrate-vmware

What will be the caveats and best practices in doing so?

@itengineer, so I'm not familiar with the process of migrating from on-prem VMware VM's to Azure that you posted originally so I can't speak to that from an experienced perspective. Conceptually, when doing migrations of the polling engines Orion generally cares about the hostnames of the polling engines, it's pretty robust against IP changes but when the hostname changes there are some edits you need to make to the DB. When doing a migration of the DB to Azure you have to make sure that you take care of the items outlined in the second article I provided you. The insight I can give you from a migration perspective is that the polling engines are generally expendable. So you could migrate the DB following this article and then build net new polling engines within Azure and then follow this article to migrate the polling engines.

@itengineer, take a look at this article if you haven't already seen it. The portion of this that is most problematic is the DB side of it so pay special attention to those requirements and this article regarding DB migration

Hi @Chris thank you for the reply and the suggestion in this case.
So is it possible or will not be as smooth as migrating the VMs to the different Hypervisor, from on-premise VMware to Azure?

That's great sharing @Chris, so is this migration supported by Solarwinds or will render my Main Polling Engines not be supported by the Solarwinds support team?
