Dreadful initial experience with SolarWinds

So let's see, after a failed install, which required resetting my 4K display to 2K just to get the SolarWinds installer to be usable, and after 1,260 seconds of downloading and installing all kinds of applications, without any information about what was happening and why, naturally the installation failed. And after spending another 20 minutes typing up everything and creating a forum message, the forum software failed, throwing an error saying that the failure was noted.

Off to a really bad start with SolarWinds. The installation is problematic, the installer doesn't respond to Windows 10 inputs such as mouse clicks, the installation failed, and the forum doesn't work.

Installing Orion on desktop OS is generally not recommended, https://documentation.solarwinds.com/en/success_center/npm/content/system_requirements/npm_2020-2_system_requirements.htm#

20m to download is slower than I'd expect, but the full install is around 3-4gb depending on which modules you are trying to get so it can take some time. Mostly would depend on your network connection though.

There is a fairly detailed install log created in c:/programdata/solarwinds that would give you more detail on whatever happened during install, but I would circle back to the unsupported OS thing as my first thought. Spin up a dev VM running server 2019 and install to that is likely to go much smoother.

Many thanks for the useful comments... Regarding the 20 minutes, some of this was download, some of it was install, on an 8 core chassis with 16 GB, but yes, it looks like 3-4 gb including SQL server, etc.

And you're correct about the installation environment... After a few minutes of digging in the system requirements, it confirmed that the desktop environment is just for demonstration.

Desktop operating systems, such as Windows 10, 64-bit Pro or Enterprise, are supported for evaluation environments only. To make a smooth transition from your evaluation to production deployment, SolarWinds recommends that you avoid installing evaluations on desktop operating systems.

BTW we have both the Oracle VM VirtualBox and the Linux subsystem on Windows. Not sure if I have a server 2019 license handy. What's the best OS for trying Orion? And idiot-proof instructions on how to do the installs.

Orion only runs on Windows Server, and those can be run with no license for like 180 days, at this stage I wouldn't stand up a new system with anything less than at least server 2016.
