SAM - new template help

Question

Hi Everyone,

I have never added a brand new application monitor to solar winds so I am not sure if I am taking the correct steps.  I tried duplicating a monitor already working for a request and when I tested it failed.

This is the request:

Can we have a profile added for our new Charter auth DNS platform?

Specifically, we’d like an application monitor that would allow monitoring the following:

* Successful lookup of “localhost IN A” as “127.0.0.1” via UDP and TCP on port 53 
* Latency for above lookup

Perhaps we could add this to the application group “DAS DNS”, “SDS”, or “DNS”?

the test device we want to associate it to is ans01sldcmo

Any help/pointers would be greatly appreciated.

i fixed it.  Where it says local host below I had localhost IN A on that line.

Try doing the opposite:  Resolve the IP address to name.  I have never seen that error message before, but it looks like a common error that you may be able to research via Google.  Usually, for that DNS user experience monitor, I configure it to resolve a website.

If it still fails after trying resolving the IP, you can turn on "debug logging" in the advanced section of that application template, and then test it again.  This will produce a debug log on your Orion application server that you can check to get more information than just a simple error message, but really, in this case, I think it is not going to return anything else extra of value - but you can still try. The log will appear in the solarwinds SAM default log directory, which I believe is C:\programdata\Solarwinds\Logs

I did exactly what you said and here is what happened when I tested.
