Alerts - Monitoring Hardware On Switch Ports

I'm having trouble figuring out how to accomplish the proper alerts for the following scenario

There is a Switch

Attached to the switch is 4 different pieces of hardware.

I have the 4 pieces of hardware in a group for mapping purposes.

I have alerts for each piece of hardware individually. It will email an alert for each piece of hardware individually if it goes down.

I'm trying to figure out how to get the alerts to recognize IF the switch is down do not email an alert on the other 4 pieces of hardware.

Seems like it should be fairly simple but I'm not getting it right. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Orion has a feature called dependencies, you make those 4 objects in their group a child of the switch, orion automatically marks them as status = unreachable whenever the switch goes down and will stop trying to poll them. Just make sure your "node down" type alerts don't alert on unreachable status and you are set.

Question regarding this before I spend a lot of time I may not need to.

Currently the switch is in the group. This is so another department outside of IT can monitor anything wrong with this particular section.

If I'm understanding this correctly I can't add the group as a child since the switch is a part of the group. I'm making the switch the parent.

In addition I seem to only be able to one piece of hardware per dependency.

The other thing I suppose I can do is make another group minus the switch. Seems messy. 1 group named xyz. 1 group named xyz2. They do almost the exact same thing.

or you can just add the devices as the children of the switch directly. Doing them directly is easy for 4 devices, it becomes a pain when you are building like 1000 dependencies, I like this method of using SQL and some custom properties to just make the computer sort it out for you:
