Application Monitors 'Grey' out continually

Hi there, been using SAM for the last month or so, and have a problem with it since upgrading to the latest version

I have all of the monitors correctly set up, but after a day or so, some of them turn to 'grey' unknown. The only way to get them to go back to up is to delete them and add them again. even if i go into the monitor and test it again the node it is currently 'unknown' for, the test passes as up - but when complete it still shows as grey.

NPM and SAM are installed on the same server and polling is all default.

Any help would be great

if anyone else is getting this kind of error, it was a problem with the database server being in a different location to the solarwinds server. Migrated the DB to a new sql server in the same datacentre, and havent seen the error since.

I noticed a problem we had when we did a major version upgrade, but this was in NCM.

It went through and put in a default value for some of our SNMP public and private passwords. Try one of the nodes that changes to a gray status and edit the node. Verify the SNMP credentials pass the test. I'd maybe experiment with one of your polling values and increase the timeout value a couple of minutes to see if it could be a communication problem.

thanks, will give that a whirl.

One other thing that i have noticed is that i seem to have a second polling engine that i no longer use. I had to set it up as part of some testing i was doing to resolve an issue ages ago - and the server it was on is no longer up. Is there an easy way to remove this polling engine?

To remove to poller, go into the Settings and Polling Engines area. Next to the poller name there should be an option to delete the poller. Select that and you will remove it. With the poller being there, you may also want to check your SAM settings to make sure you are local only and not poller bound.

You may need to work with Solarwinds support on this one. We had the same issue when we migrated to a new database server.

The polling engines are associated with an ID in the SQL tables, and sometimes the tables have nodes, sonars, etc., assoicated with the old poller.

I'd have a tech go through with you on a GoToMeeting session and make sure all your SQL tables reflect the correct poller engine with all your nodes.

What version of SAM are you currently running?
What version of NPM are you currently running?
What OS version are you running on?
How many component monitors are you currently monitoring with SAM?
How many elements are you currently monitoring with NPM?
Do you have any additional pollers?
Is the node status unknown (gray) or the application component monitors?
Are all component monitor types in an unknown status or only some of them?
Are the nodes being monitored local to the Orion server or are you monitoring them remotely (over a WAN/Internet/etc.)?

Latest version 5.1

What version of NPM are you currently running?

NPM 3.0.1

What OS version are you running on?

Windows 2008 R2

How many component monitors are you currently monitoring with SAM?

It was about 50 - but i reduced it to 3 just to test. it doesn't matter how many there are, they will go 'grey'. Some times they will come back up, but mostly they will stay grey until I add / remove

How many elements are you currently monitoring with NPM?

As stated, there was an additional polling engine, but this was turned off some time ago. i have removed it now

How are these nodes managed? Are they ICMP, SNMP, or WMI managed nodes?
