Java Runtime 8u202 Third Party Update problem

Hi All,

I have a problem with the latest Java Runtime 8u202 update from the third party updates section

I recently approved the update for some test PCs - the update goes through and installs fine - but when the windows updates does the check for updates it picks up the Java Runtime 8u202 is still needed.

Ive logged in to the PC and checked which version of Java is installed - it has 8u202

Ive checked the applicability and installed ruleset and they look correct

Is they anything I might have missed or anyone else having a similar issue ?

If your installed rules match correctly, I believe I've seen an issue with this where deleting and re-publishing resolved the issue:

1) Delete the update from WSUS.

2) Delete the update from the Packages catalog.

3) Re-synchronize the catalog.

4) Re-publish the update.

This usually resolves the issue if it's the same thing.

I'm pushing out the Java 8u121 upgrade and experienced the same issue. I have tried the steps above and am still getting the issue with Java wanting to reinstall itself, even though the update was successful.

I am also experiencing this issue, and like broadlandd said, it's been happening since the earlier Java packages.

Oracle appears to have changed the format of the fileversion property on java.dll. This property is used in the applicable and installed rules.

Previously the file version for 8u201 would have been 8.0.2010.9 this also matches the product version property. This release kept the product version as expected but the file version is 8.0.201.9. The missing 0 causes the installed rule to fail as written. This causes the update loop you described.

Thanks for flagging this issue, revised packages have now been uploaded to the catalog. There was a minor error within one of the Install Rules. Apologies for any inconvenience caused.

Perfect - if you can let me know how it goes, that'd be great. Just to make sure to synchronise with the catalog to ensure you've got the revised package and delete the old package on your WSUS prior to publishing the revised package. Thanks for bearing with us!

That was exactly the root cause. We've updated the package which changes the File Version within the Installed Rule to 8.0.202.8

I've been waiting for my Patch Manager to grab the latest updates, but so far, nothing has downloaded. I've tried manually syncing my catalog, rebuilding the catalog (there's a How-To here...) but nothing. I'm wondering if it has to do with the recent Java rebuild, because after I posted that I was experiencing the same problems with Java installing over itself, the next day all of my most recent Java packages were gone from my Patch Manager. I'm not sure if SolarWinds did a force removal of the bad packages, but either way, I've had nothing new since then. Any ideas?

/edit - This is just for Java updates, everything else is current with the last release table.

/edit2 - Self sorted. Must have been a glitch in the Matrix, because I log in this morning, and all my Java is back.

I was having similar issues as everyone else here with the update for jre8u201. As done by jpfromit below, I deleted the package from Package Manager, then re-synchronised my catalogs. For me though, the update package for jre8u201 did NOT come back. I deleted it yesterday, have resynch'd the catalogs multiple times now, and it's still missing. Any ideas?

Hi,

I have the same problem with version 8u202. I have deleted the packages from SolarWinds and recreated the package. How do I know the recreated package is the new one with the correct version number? I have right clicked the package and selected 'open package location'. When I right click the version of Java within this folder and look at the 'details' tab within properties, it still says 'file version 8.0.2020.8'. Does thia mean that I will have the same issue with this version?

It isn't the file version of Java that was causing the issue, it was the installer rules that directed the update to look at the .DLL file (I believe) for an incorrect version number. The latest version of Java is 8u202, which will show as 8.0.2020.8, and that's all good. If your Java installer is still trying to install on top of itself, make sure you've got the latest package (creation date should be around Jan 30/Feb 1) and you're not rebuilding older packages.
