Memory usage on Orion Server

HI all,

After many months of not really getting anywhere with SolarWinds support, could I ask this community a question regarding Orion memory usage.

What is normal memory usage for you on your orion application server, I understand every setup will be different and depends on modules, nodes monitored etc.

The reason being, we have NPM, NCM, VMAN, IPAM and VNQM, monitoring around 9500 elements on a physical server with 64GB. The recommended setup for this is 24GB and our memory increases over time and plateaus at 95%. I'm asking SolarWinds support if this is normal as we believe the services gets degraded when memory gets that high but support say unless services are failing its not a problem.

Do all of your environments slowly increase memory to near max?

Any info is much appreciated.

@grayknighty your environment is similar to ours in terms of modules and elements.

We are using NPM, NCM, VMAN, IPAM monitoring around 9200 elements on one physical server with 20GB ram and 5000 elements on another physical server with 16Gb ram.

Our CPU usage over a 30 day period is around 55-60% on both of these servers, so much lower that you are experiencing.

Is it the Orion processes that are consuming all of the memory?

Open task manager and sort by memory load, which processes are taking up the most?

Also what versions of Orion and these modules are you running? There are known memory leak bugs in older versions so if you’re not at the latest (as of now 2020.2.4) I’d recommend upgrading.

@grayknighty apologies. that is our memory usage and not CPU usage as i'd originally typed, one of those days i'm afraid.
