Polling VMware environments

So I have I have very little experience with VMware environmnents (and by little I mean 0). I am setting up Solarwinds at my new employer who relies heavily on VMware. Per our security policies I will need to setup a request for credentials for me to poll these devices.

When I look at the VMware section of adding a node it says

vCenter or ESX credentials

Which do I need? Also is there a specific level of rights that's required to monitor the VM states? I need to assure I put in the request correctly to help prevent it from coming back to me.

I get the same 403 forbidden error. I'm using Chrome.

What I would like to know is, if you are monitoring vCenter and vCenter is unavailable, do you lose visibility to all the VMs?
