We are expanding our SolarWinds and would like to monitor/manage over 900 IP cameras. Has anyone had any success with this?
I got a few IP cameras (~20), but I don't monitor them using SNMP
I have found that even though cameras are active on the network, there are a lot more things that would affect video stream than whether it is simply up or down
we have some that show network activity, but no video stream, so even though they would show available in SW, the Security guys who look at the video streams, see nada, and the IT guys that manage the recording data, get little.
so even though it is up and not generating an alert in SW, a tech still has to go out to the site and troubleshoot\change it
Hope you have success at it cuz it sounds like a great project
It all depends on what protocols the cameras support and what data you're looking to gather/monitor. Are you trying to get usage or environmental stats? I doubt you'll get that from a camera, but I could be wrong. If you're just looking to make sure the camera is alive, then you'll be able to monitor it using ICMP just like any other device. So you'll get response time and availability stats, but not much else. As long as it's got an IP, Solarwinds should be able to handle it in some capacity.
If you've got a manufacturer/model number that you're willing to share that may help shed some light on what type of reporting you can extract from them.
