Cisco MSFC VLAN Utilization

We have quite a few Catalyst 6506s with Sup720s in them. We are monitoring both physical interfaces (like servers) and VLAN interfaces on the switch. All of the VLAN interfaces after being discovered have a default interface speed of 1GB. We are now getting alerts that there is high utilization on that VLAN interface. Sometimes it shows rates above 1GB in the alert.

I'm not sure this is a SW thing or a Cisco thing. I would expect the VLAN speed to be much higher.

How do you quantify the bandwidth available on a Virtual Network or interface?
Some loopback interfaces are discovered with 8Gbps of bandwidth, but they to are virtual....?

I just tune my VLAN speed according to the 95th percentile over the past month.
Most of mine are set to 3Gb, and any that go over 90%, we will investigate.

The 1GB is default and what Orion picks up when it does a discovery. I agree that the value should be higher and there has to be some limit to what that value should be. I'm assuming this value is coming from the cisco mib. Before I open a TAC case with them I just wanted to see what other people are doing in this situation.

When I add my VLAN interfaces to Orion from my Cat4500s, or any of my 2950, 3560 series, etc. - I'm not able to capture any data. Orion never reports any transmit/receive information. This is true of any VLAN interfaces on any of my hardware. I just assumed it wasn't possible.

These are Layer 3 Vlans on the Sup720.

Hello,

Did you ever get a solution for this? I installed NPM in January and I'm just starting to really get into it. I'm also getting bandwidth utilitzation errors on VLANs. I would think the actual bandwidth of the VLAN should at least match the fastest interface? (10 Gigs for me but if I create an etherchannel that would be 20, etc.) Maybe it should be set to the backplane speed?
