SNMP to Dell 1855 Blade Chassis

Has anyone else had any trouble getting SNMP traffic to servers in the Dell 1855 blade chassis? I have SNMP configured like all of my other servers but do not receive any response when querying them on port 161. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

If you can download NET-SNMP and install it on one of the 1855 blades and run the following command from the directory where you installed it.

snmpget -c public -v 2c 127.0.0.1 system.sysUpTime.0

If that doesn't work make sure you add 127.0.0.1 as well as the IP address of the server itself to the list of hosts allowed to SNMP query the server. and try again.

I have 30+ 1855 and 1955 blades with no issue. Are you sure you have SNMP installed, configured to allow connections from your Orion server and are using the correct community string? You should probably install Dell Server Administrator which is part of Dell OpenManage (Managed Node) solution. This will not only ensure that SNMP is installed, but will greatly expand what's available to monitor via SNMP.

Beyond all that, make sure there's not any layer 3 security devices blocking SNMP between Orion and your 1855.

I appreciate your quick response but unfortunately all of those suggestions have already been considered. SNMP is installed on each individual server with connections being allowed from any host (for the purposes of troubleshooting). OpenManage is installed on every server as well. The SNMP packets are touching layer 3 but there is no firewall or content filtering devices between the Orion server and the servers I want to manage. And for the sake of simplicity the community string is set to public just to make sure I'm not mistyping my community string. We are using the GigE passthrough modules and I'm not sure if that has anything to do with this issue as I was not the administrator who configured this chassis. Do the blade chassis even have the ability to filter traffic based on port? Do you have any other suggestions on where my issue may reside?

Can you ping the blade servers from the Orion server and vice versa? Have you tried stopping the Windows Firewall/ICS service to verify the firewall isn't on?

I can ping and can do ICMP only monitoring. I just checked for the windows firewall and it is not turned on.

bcjordo, were you ever able to figure out what the problem was?

Unfortunately I have not had an opportunity to do this test. The uninstall of Windows SNMP on the servers asked for a reboot and since they are all production servers I'm going to have to wait for a maintenance window to test this solution. My guess is that since SNMP did not uninstall cleanly, it is probably an issue relating to the software. I will update this thread as soon as I can test this out.

Well...sorry for the wild goose chase here. I reinstalled Windows SNMP and it worked fine. I guess there was something wrong with the source files I used for the previous install. I swear the same source was used but the reinstall fixed it. Sorry for wasting your time. I will credit aLTeReGo with the answer though since it was that post that got me moving in the right direction. Thanks for the help everyone.

As you got as far as configuring SNMP on Dell Blades, I was wondering how is your experience with Dell Blades so far. How is their support?

Our company is currently planning to move to blade, and we are comparison between SUN Blades & Dell Blades. The best comparison we were able to find so far was SUN Blade Server vs Dell Blade Server at ITComparison.com. Though as this regarded a quite big investment for our company, I would like to hear from other Dell Blades & SUN Blades owners.

Do you recommend buying or not buying Dell Blades? & Why is that?

We use Dell M600 and M610 Blades pretty much exclusively... THe savings are excellent compared to standalone servers... We used to buy 2950's and by the time we put in dual HBA's, wired the network and SAN connections the costs really racked up.

We save about $70,000 with a fully stocked M1000 Blade Chassis compared to 16 2950 class servers... and that savings is JUST on the SAN ports, Cisco Ports, Cabling, PDU hookups, and cabling. That doesn't even begin to factor in the energy and heat savings which are substantial...

There's limited internal storage in the blades, be we find it's either adequate or when it isn't we were generally going to use SAN Storage anyway...

We looked at Sun Blades (and HP) before going with Dell... we chose Dell largely due to cost, vendor simplification, and a few other internal reasons. Sun makes an EXCELLENT product... and they make you pay for it...

Dell has been playing catchup in the Blade arena for a while. HP's consistently had a better product, but the M1000's catch up to them pretty much in every category... plus installation is far simpler with Dell than it is with HP... But good products all around.
