Monitor shares

How can I monitor if a windows share is available? I don't want to monitor if a file is available on the share to accomplish this. There should be a way to monitor the share itself. We're moving from Nagios to solarwinds and I've been monitoring shares with Nagios for years so I'm sure it's possible. Anyone have any ideas?

I gave in and just put a txt file on the root of each share and created a template to check for the file. I modified permissions so only an admin can delete the file.

Nagios is open source, maybe you guys could see how they monitor shares and just make something based off of it.

We don't have a specific monitor for this. If you're doing it with Nagios, we have a script that will run a Nagios plugin and convert the output to APM-friendly format. You can find it in the script folder of APM.

In APM 3.0, we've got a Directory count monitor that counts the number of files in a directory. We haven't tried it, but that should work.

Thanks for the quick reply. I've used several of the nagios scripts for monitoring linux servers but I haven't been able to get them to work in solarwinds for monitoring windows servers. It seems solarwinds is looking for a vbscript for the windows servers and none of the nagios scripts are vbscripts.

Hi,

I had/have an issue getting perl scripts to run correctly on windows in general not because the script wont run on windows but because APM requires you to use WSH/WScript to initialise the perl script. A simple script which doesnt reference external components will work however I found as soon as it uses external script components (which is what most of the existing scripts written for nagios) it fails with an illegal status code (eg 42349089332480) instead of 0;1 etc as when run without WSH/Wscript.

I was trying to implement a radius user experience monitor.

No resolution as yet unfortunately.
