Network Performance Monitor (NPM)
v8 and v7 sharing the same database.
bpalma
I'm about to do an upgrade from v7 to v8. I've gotten a new server for the v8 version, but the SQL server is still going to be the same separate machine it was for the v7 instance. We are using Orion to monitor several different of our customers (about 90 total). I want to install v8 on the new machine, but have it still using the existing v7 database so all the historical data is kept. With all the firewall/router/switch ACL changes required, I can't do an all at once move.
I've done a comparison of the v7 database and v8 database. Most of the differences are field lengths (50 -> 250), field types (ie. text to ntext), and a couple of new tables for the custom poller stuff in v8.
My question for people here is this: Can I run both v7 and v8 off the same database until I have all of the customers moved over? Will v7 run with the database structure of v8?
Thanks,
Bob Palma

Definitely not - I would not even consider this.
You are in for a world of hurt if you try this.
Judging by the number of members upgrades that have had other issues, I wouldn't want to throw this in the mix as well .

Back up the database ...rename it when you restore it for v8 to use.
Run both simultaneous as long as the devices can handle being double polled.
Start pruining from the v7 as soon as they are up and running good on the v8.
