Unmanaged Interfaces

I seem to remember a post from some time ago that lamented the fact that it was not possible to unmanage interfaces in Orion. We currently use NNM and I use that feature all the time. If I didn't, I'd have a huge number of devices in my network that would appear to have problems when they really don't.

Has this capability been added to Orion yet?

I hate to reply to my own topic, but I have to ask...does no one know whether it's possible to unmanage interfaces?

Orion System Manager>Right Click on Device>List Resources>Remove checks from any interfaces you don't want to manage.

Currently, you can unmanage nodes within Orion but there is not a feature to unmanage interfaces.

good question - what I've found is this:

1) if you unmanage a node, the historical data will remain in your system. Thus if you ever need to go back and report on it, it's there. However in an unmanaged state, it's not supposed to count against uptime and availability, etc. If you don't need to retain or report on historical data, simply remove/delete it from the database.

I use unmanage node for maintenance periods - it allows you to unmanage for a certain period of time and then resume automatically, monitoring. If you want to retain the historical data but have permentantly removed the node from your enviro, simply unmanage it for a year or two... you'll need to update your view filters to not show unmanaged nodes in your views though.

2) Unmanaged interfaces - not a way to do it. Would definitely be a good feature. I also would like availability info on interfaces vs. just nodes alltogether. Keep in mind if you "uncheck" that interface from monitoring in a node, I think it will remove the historical data from the DB forever, so make sure you are ok with that.

So, let's say I'm monitoring a bunch of switches. From NPM's perspective, a switch will only show a solid green status icon if every port is up. As soon as someone turns off a PC and the interface goes down, the icon will acquire a flashing red dot, right? That means that every switch in my network would have look to my NOC as if it had some sort of problem.

I guess we'd just have to learn to differentiate between a big red dot and the big green dot with small, red, flashing dot.

My preference would be to unmanage interfaces connected to end devices.

And what about router interfaces used for dial backup? They're *supposed* to be down! Down is good, and up is bad! All of my routers with dial backup interfaces would have flashing red dots instead of simply a solid green dot.

How do you all get around this problem? Do you just get used to it?

No one is saying you have to monitor the access ports on a switch. I only monitor the uplink and the CPU on my Cisco devices. If an uplink goes down I want to know about it. If a user shuts down their PC I don't care so why monitor it.

As long as the uplink is good and the device is pingable the status will always be green

That's really what I was asking: is it possible to manage certain interfaces but not others. It seemed like everyone was saying that you either monitored a device or you didn't. It didn't sound like I had to ability to monitor only certain interfaces on a device while ignoring others. I must have been asking the wrong question.

Most of the errors in our network are at the access layer.
Would like to be able to get trending information on the interfaces without monitoring for status.

Has anyone found/documented a way to do this? We really don't care if the user shuts down there PCs. We would like to just monitor the uplinks if possible.
