Only Display certain Groups on a dashboard

Hi,

I have a bunch of groups that I want to display on a dashboard using the All Groups Widget. My issue is that there are some groups that we have created, that we do not need in this view. So for example, I have 5 groups. Product1, Product2, Product3, Product4, OlderSystems1. I only want to include Product 1-4 groups and not OlderSystems1. How can I prevent them from seeing the group in JUST this dashboard. They need access to the other groups, but not on this dashboard.

You can customize the page and add a view limitation for 'Group of Groups' and you should be able to select the groups that you want this dashboard to be limited to, e.g. the dashboard will only show info for x, y, and z groups. That should do it.

Do note that this would limit all resources on that specific dashboard to that group.

Thanks. Is there a way to do it so that it only affects that one resource item instead of the entire dashboard? I want them to be able to see other information on the same dashboard that might not have to do with those groups.

I can't comment about the SQL Custom Resource as I have not used that before, but for limitations you can either put a limit on the entire view, or put a limit on a per-user basis. The end-result is the same, but doing it per-user might help you out a little more. That said -- I don't believe there's a way just to limit the group resource itself unfortunately without affecting the rest of the view.

I am pretty sure that it can be done with SQL with a custom query, I just don't know Solarwinds well enough to write it.

We will see if anyone else here might be able to assist.

So I am going to bump this one time. I am looking for a SQL query that I can use in the custom SQL Query Resource that will only show me groups that start with ABC. I can't use limitations as they need to be able to access other things in the view, but for this particular resource, they only want to see certain Groups. Any Thoughts?

Exactly what I would do for now. I would further add a Group By to the custom table for better readability

Also note that you can add filtering based on the Group name in the Datasource definition, i.e., you don't have to create custom properties

HI guys. Thanks for all the suggestions! I have used the custom properties like that in the past, but in this case, it would not be efficient. For several reasons. First, we need them to be dynamically added to the groups after an automatic discovery is run. There are constant servers being added (I am talking multiple servers per day) and the upkeep would just be crazy using custom properties. Also, some servers belong to multiple products, so again that would make using custom properties more difficult.

I think the only way to go will be a SQL Query.

spross, you can create a group and setup a dynamic query to automatically add the servers into it, not sure what you would use for the query but i assume you would use this same thing for the sql string you are trying to create.

Than assign the custom property and hey presto!
