I would love to know who to set this value... I'm want to set Machine TYpe System Name and Location (on the devices) but can't find any Document on how this information is changed or where it comes from. Can anyone shed some light? I'm using linux on the machines I would like to change.
Hi cschneide: Your desired information are MIB values returned by your SNMP agent (on monitored device). These information are get when discovering the device and must be set correctly on the device, so the SNMP agent can return correct values.
You have to submit a support ticket to SolarWinds -- there is a long-running thread on the board titled something like 'Tell us your unknown devices' which is pretty much ignored by SolarWinds (sorry to seem negative, but the thread has been running for many years for what should be a simple lookup table pre-populated with sysObjectID to vendor, vendorIcon, and machinetype.)
Unfortunately if you go ahead an update the MachineType in the nodes table then when the periodic rediscovery gets run it will reset the value.
If you tell your Linux systems to return your own Vendor sysObjectID SWO will flag it as an 'unknown' device. If we had the table then you could put your own sysObjectID to Machinetype in there and it would all work out.
I have it all set not but I have tried quite a few ways to set the OID for the Machine Type but it seems to not be there... It seem to simply grab the "net-SNMP - linux" and not one forum post give a good answer to how to change this.
