Does NTA have to be on its own server with its own database? Or can I install it on an existing Orion server that currently runs NPM, IPAM, UDT etc. with a SQL database dedicated to solarwinds?
Hi Todd,
So NetFlow comes in two parts (similar to Orion itself) in that there is the Web UI end (or Module) and then the Data. Previously in older versions, Netflow data was stored in the Orion SQL Database, but as of Version 4.0 it was removed and put into a separate FlowStore.
So when you design for Netflow you would normally install the NTA FlowStorage on a dedicated server (in the same way you did your SQL hopefully) and then you would install the NTA Engine onto your Orion server along with your other modules. You would end up with:
Orion Main Server (Running NPM, IPAM, UDT & NTA)
Orion SQL Server
Orion NTA Flow Storage Server
Any Additional Pollers
Hope that helps.
PS - Of course that is going based on SolarWinds best practice there is nothing to stop you loading all of that on the same server if you wanted to, but you would see a massive performance impact.
Hello Todd,
Besides what David Smith stated below is the installation guide from our Success Center also just to point out you do not need a SQL server for the NTA FSDB installation.
