Cisco Serial No via SNMP
Jules2003
Hi
Using the ip network browser (or anything else in the toolset) is it possible to aquire the Serial Number via SNMP private string. I can get most other things like the ios version, the uptime stats/ports.
Any help would be great.
Cheers
Julian

Depends on what type of device it is.
You can for most Cisco routers....

Cisco Works reports a serial number so it can be done. The problem is that this serial number is for the motherboard or something. It does not match up with the chassis serial number. So, using this reported serial number for smartnet for instance, is not possible. What we have done is to use one of the available SNMP variables like "contact" to report the chassis serial number which along with "location" gives us what we need to know.

Actually, it depends on the type of Cisco device you are polling.
A Cisco7206 has the serial number printed on the chassis, which is different than the processor board serial number - as Mike has posted.
Integrated devices such as a Cisco800 series or 1700 series router use the Processor ID as the device serial number as well
