What is the query language used?

Hello,

What is the query language used? I'd like to know so I can learn how to create better queries. I'm a newbie to query language. I looked at the admin guide and the query section isn't very helpful for someone with little to no DB experience.

It was explained to me yesterday that the query language is a cross between SQL and PERL. Sorry that probably isn't much help, I'm new to it as well.
