Now here is something that BUGs me....

I suspect it was a BUG before that has been fixed.

So I discovered, more by accident, IIRC, that if I wanted to 'force rescan' a node, and the button to do that didn't 'appear' .... then all I needed to do when in List Resources view is click on the browser back button. This wouldn't actually go back to the prior view, but instead would refresh the list of resources and also offer me the force rescan button.

Since we upgraded to 2020.2.6 HF3, this little trick (bug??) has now gone.

So, here's my two part question:

How do I get the force rescan button to appear without exiting and re-entering list resource view and that doesn't always work first time?

and
Any other fun little bugs out there that you suspect aren't bugs but help you do your job?

N.B.. this is all just in NPM.

I think I know what is happening. If you scan a node recently (list resources), then list resource again. The notice that you are viewing a cached version of resources with the timestamp of that scan will show up. Next to it, you see the Force Refesh button. I am not sure, but I think it will do this for up to a day now. I believe it it would this in the past for longer time periods though. So cancelling the list resource page, then scanning again - maybe a minute or two later, should cause the cached version with Force Rescan option to appear. I believe that list resources attempts to poll the device and only grabs the cached version if it is 'recent.'

I just did a list resources, cancelled the output, and immediately did list resources again. The cached note appear with the option to force a rescan, the timestamp was from seconds prior. Again, I believe that list resources attempts to scan the node, so forcing it should not be necessary. I bet that the back button is the same as cancelling and running a new list resources, so the force rescan makes sense.

Any chance you can add screenshots for this? I'd like to validate that this is what I think it is.

My belief is that @marcrobinson is correct - that the rescan only appears if a previous scan was started (for whatever reason) and the results cached (as to not overload the target device). Otherwise, if there's no cached information for that scan, you trigger a scan when you navigate to that page.

Why you may ask? From personal experience, I used to have a bunch of voice routers in my environment with a ton of PRIs. Those could have hundreds, nay, thousands of interfaces. If multiple users hit "List Resources" in a close timeframe it would cause an SNMP crawl of these elements and none of them would ever get completed.

Note: I'm not on the developer or product team, but this was a complaint that I personally use to have, so having cached results would have helped me tremendously.

Kevin - would love to assist but the issue I had** no longer occurs.

I understand your explanation, and that makes perfect sense but equally having a reliable method of getting the rescan button to appear should be achievable. In reality, if it was limited to specific user accounts then that would be better but then that would mean SolarWinds also need to do some serious work on granularity of account permissions.

** that being that I'd click 'list resources' and as it is initially loading hit the browser back button which would then provide me the 'force rescan' button.

Anyway, one screenshot - let me know if more (and of what) will help?

To get the rescan button, the steps taken were:

select node via tick box (approx 08:20:30)
click list resources
click browser back button
- (N.B. this goes all the way back to the 'manage nodes' view now)
re-select node via tick box
click list resources and get above screenshot cached view

I just wanted to bump the comment up about voice routers. LOTS and LOTS of interfaces.

Oooh - One more thought, I am starting to think that hitting the back button may not necessarily cancel an ongoing scan, but it would refresh the page and detect the recent list resources job. Whether or not that last list resources job completed... I cannot really answer that with any surety. If it would continue, and avoid timeouts for devices with gobs of stuff, that would be a weird and useful bug.

Why are you looking for this rescan button? I'm assume the 'cache' funtion times out after a certain time frame so then it would just do a rescan again. I just don't see where you would scan and then want to scan the device again straight away other than if you forgot to select something to monitor in which case the cache version allows you to do that.
