How to change IP that Polling Engine Uses?

Our main SAM server only had 1 IP address when the server was built. Since then, a 2nd IP has been added for another website we host on that machine. The polling engine on this machine is now showing that it wants to use that 2nd new IP address instead of the original one it was setup on. I've looked through the settings and searched on hear but not finding the answer. How do I set the IP that I want the polling engine to use? Thanks in advance.

As far as I know the IP of the Polling Engine is in the Database in the dbo.Engines table.It might revert to the other IP when you restart the Services, I think it Checks the DNS and uses the IP the DNS Server sends back.

Hello, if you are using multiple network adapters on your server, you have to manually specify which ip address to use. To accomplish this, you have to manually add a "metric" to each interface. Windows will automatically use the interface with a lower metric (in your case, this would be your polling engine's ip address). To check and change your network adapters' metric:

1. Open Command Prompt and type: route print - you will see a list of active routes, the last column displaying their "metric". Lower metric routes are preferred over higher ones.

2. Open the Network Adapter Properties (Control Panel > Network and Internet > Network Connections > right-click on adapter and choose Properties)

3. Open the properties of Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4).

4. Click on Advanced.

5. Untick "Automatic Metric" and set the interface metric to a number.

6. Hit OK until you close the Network Adapter properties.

7. Repeat steps 2-6 for your other network adapter(s) choosing different metrics. Remember lower metrics are preferred over higher ones.

Check the new metrics in Command Prompt by typing: route print

For example: If you want to set your 1st ip address to be your polling engine's ip address, set the metric to '1', then set your 2nd ip address metric to '2'. Let me know if this helps.

DNS resolves to the IP that I'd like to use, but it's not the one the polling engine is using. I'll see if changing that in the db will make a difference.

There's only 1 nic with 2 IP's assigned to it. I always thought that windows would use the ip closest to the gateway, but doesn't appear to be that way.

I have the same question. Have you found an answer elsewhere? Or did you configure an additional NIC to be able to accommodate the need?

you "should" be able to specify the order of the NICs in the OS-Settings, the "primary" nic should then be used as the polling nic...I think I ran into this issue once a while ago.

I vote for this being the correct answer. I think OPs question was the same as mine (how to accomplish this with a single NIC using multiple IP addresses); I changed to dual NICs with the lower metric applied to the NIC that I assigned the polling IP address to instead. Works perfect.
