Windows Server monitoring via SNMP?

Hi All,

I know its not a good way to monitor Windows devices via SNMP but we have got a requirement from 1 customer where they have some set of servers where they want to disable WMI.

So in this case, i can see only 2 options- SNMP or agent based. Agent based customer will not agree. So is it good to monitor via SNMP? If yes then what are the cons and what we will miss out when compared with WMI/ Agent based setup.

Hi pratikmehta003 here is a good link to show the customer the different functionality available to them based on the monitoring mode.

So if you see from that link with SNMP Only you will NOT get:

Hyper-V Information

Network Interface Monitoring

Ability to Reboot

Linux Load Avg

Specific Volume Information (Disk Transfer, IOPS etc)

Certain SAM Templates won't work without WMI or Agent

The bigger concern as stated by bogdan.stan@xpo.com is that Windows doesn't natively support SNMP on Windows Server 2016 or later, so you need the customer to confirm that the Windows estate they want monitored is running Win 2012 or earlier otherwise SNMP isn't really a practical option without them having to install 3rd party applications, in which case the SolarWinds Agent would be the better option.

thanks.. but with SNMP, will i be able to monitor the drives, ports etc?

If you want to use SNMP on windows servers above 2012R2 you will need 3th party software as SNMP is no longer a feature you can enable.

Also if you want to use SNMP v3 you will need a 3th party solution and you will not be able to use GPO to push the configuration.

What are your customer concerns in regards to deploying the Solarwidns agent?

Thanks for the note. yes i did see similar responses in other threads...

As of now, what customer is stating is that they want to disable WMI... we are informing them on agent based too but havent got the response. They are requesting info on the SNMP usage...
