Alert generation for AppInsight Services enabled for monitoring

All,

We have enabled AppInsight applications for the required and added the device to the corresponding template. But, still we did not receive an alert when the related service is down.

Under List Resources, we have enabled the below.

Under the templates, we can see the below for the related node

When the MOM5_PRODUCTION related service down, we did not get any alert generated on the node.

Please advise, how to get the alert generation when the above enabled AppInsight are enabled for monitoring under List Resources.

Two thoughts uniswtc :

1: have you created an alert specifically for this or configured one?

2: have you created a dependency for this, such as (group) is dependent on (application or service), which can then be associated via custom properties?

Alerts aren't really turned on for something out of the box unless you configure them. OOTB alerts will mostly only write to the NPM perfmon log.

Looks like the status is Unknown, not down. You won't get an alert for this condition out of the box.

You need to create an alert for status = "not up" to see this kind of gray status triggered in an action.

I would look at the configuration though and see why its in an unknown gray state first.

Thanks for the details. No alert rule was generated specifically for these type of (Instance) services. Since they were enabled in List resources and assigned to a template.

If we have to configure alert rule, do we need to select the application or component in the trigger condition?

Ok, so let's circle around a little with the basics of what SAM does. orioncrack is on the same page as I am here in that you need to define an alert to fit your criteria.

When you do list resources for a server in Orion, all you're picking is what to monitor from a default list. That's not even all of the options available within SAM's templates, it's merely built in items based on what modules are in your Solarwinds install and for SAM tends to include Appinsight templates. This doesn't mean turning on alerts, you have to define your own as mentioned.

An example like orioncrack says means that you have to choose how detailed you want your template alerting to be. As in:

Do you alert when an individual component (in a template) is in a state other than up?

Do you alert when an individual component (in a template) is down (only)?

Do you alert when a template itself is in warning?

Do you alert when a template itself is down (only)?

Do you alert for a specific component/template, or do you want this alert for all components/templates?

Then after you define your criteria and thresholds you can get into what you want to happen when the alert goes off such as write to the NPM perfmon log or send an email execute a script, etc (look at actions).

These are choices specific to your environment to keep in mind for creating a new alert.

TL;DR: you need to create a new alert for yourself, look at the canned ones to see some of what can be alerted on if you are unfamiliar with creating alerts in Orion - you can copy those to a new alert if you want to take the existing one and modify it.

Thanks for the detailed information. Yes, I would like to write an alert on the instance, with service name or display name in the trigger condition for the instance MOM5_PRODUCTION. I tried with Component name (alerting properties) contains MSSQL@MOM5_PRODUCTION. Still I did not get it.

So, I am looking for the Trigger Conditions to be used to get the alert generated. Would it be Component level, or application level or DB level? It would be great, if you can provide the conditions.

If it includes this condition Do you alert when an individual component (in a template) is down (only)?, then Yes. Whatever way it is. need to generate the alert. I tried all the mentioned scenarios, still in vain. The objects include SQL Server on MOM5_PRODUCTION, etc., which are down.

Have you looked through Create and manage alerts for SAM - SolarWinds Worldwide, LLC. Help and Support ?

All I can say is this looks more granular than is necessary. There's no node focus here, so why include nodes at all? Just application template (with a custom property on that template to only include the ones you want) -> component -> instance ?

Any thoughts on additional simplification I'd lean on our geeks such as adatole
