monitoring a service without collection performance counters

Question

I have a few windows services I would just like to monitor the presence or lack of presence of and up/down.  I don't care about a dozen performance counters being collected from each one.  Is it possible to monitor a service without collecting performance counters on that service?  I don't see the ability to turn that option off?

You are correct, the OOTB service monitor collects the cpu/mem/vmem/iops and there is no ability to control for it.  You could roll own script based monitor doing something like a net service lookup, but it would only serve to make your life more complicated dealing with things like that.  Best to just set all the thresholds to be blank for the resource counters and go on about your day.
