Orion Maps - Images keep disappearing - WHY???

I am so FRUSTRATED with Orion Maps since the last SolarWinds update. Issues with not being able to add URLs to images and now the images are disappearing from the map. The box that contains the image is there, but NO image. WHY? I've had to add this image four times since the update. Orion Maps was such a huge homerun for us and now it's so buggy that I can't trust it to display what the customer is needing. I can't keep testing over 40 dashboards a day just to make sure that the images keep displaying.

Update for those following at home:

I'm working with SolarWinds support who's working with their Dev. team. It looks like some of the images are not creating a ProjectID in the Maps_Assets table. Here's the work-around steps provided by support:

1. Create a new map with the background images

2. Save the map - Important: Make sure that the Maps_Assets table is in the database

3. Run the below query to assign the images a ProjectID:

DECLARE @projectID NVARCHAR(50)

SELECT TOP 1 @projectID = projectid
FROM   maps_assetusage
ORDER  BY updatedatetime DESC

UPDATE maps_assets
SET    projectid = @projectID
WHERE  assetid IN (SELECT assetid
                   FROM   maps_assetusage
                   WHERE  projectid = @projectID)

Thanks for sharing this info @s-bolyard. Apologies for the headache. Have you by chance generated a support case and can you share that here? Are the images disappearing after an upgrade, or seemingly at random times after they are added? Do you see a similar behavior if you look at the dashboard or map in a different browser (Chrome, Edge, FF, Safari)?

Hello @jblankjblank and thanks for the response. I just now submitted a case with SolarWinds support (00813389). I started noticing this behavior after the update to 2020.2.5 and I was also having issues with adding a SolarWinds summary URL to an image or label. Support did come up with a new format that seems to be working at the moment. I did try accessing the map in Chrome and in Edge and the images are gone in both browsers. Do you know if I need to be storing images in a centralized location on the main poller? I thought the images could be local on my workstation, but now I'm starting to wonder if that's not the case.

The URL scenario was in fact an issue caused to changes made in order to strengthen security. However, as indicated the bug that was caused should be addressed and both static and relative URLs should be working with some changes to how those URLs are formatted.

The image issue is something that will need to be investigated. I actually have an example in my lab as well so please be sure to share your diagnostics through the support case and I will work with Engineering to investigate.

Hi,

I had a similar issue with 2020.2.5. Each night the background image on my Orion Map would disappear. I would add it back the next morning, but overnight it would go again.

Support confirmed this is a but with version 2020.2.5 with no resolution at present. Here I the workaround they provided to try to resolve the issue in the short term.

NOTE: backup the database before running the supplied script. The script came with the usual disclaimer regarding running scripts.

Create new map with the background image .
Save the map
Backup Maps_Assets table
Run the query right after map was saved (this query will update ProjectId in Maps_Assets table to the correct one)

declare @projectID nvarchar(50)

select top 1 @projectID = ProjectID from Maps_AssetUsage
order by UpdateDateTime desc
update Maps_Assets
set ProjectID = @projectIDwhere AssetID in (
select AssetID from Maps_AssetUsage
where ProjectID = @projectID
)

This query should be run each time when customer adding new background and saving the map.

Perhaps you both can clarify. I have not seen this issue if using the Background Image from Map Properties, or if you change the Icon to a custom image from the Properties Panel either. The only scenario in which this has occurred in my tests was if I used the Insert Image from the tool bar.

My issue is with the insert image from the tool bar. I have a couple of dashboards that use the background option, but those seem to be ok.

I am adding the Background image from Orion Maps by clicking BACKGROUND and Selecting an image.

The image looks perfect until the next day when the image has gone.

Thank you. From what I can tell @terryk issue is being tracked, you obviously have a workaround, and I believe a permanent fix for this issue will be delivered in an upcoming release. Thank you for sharing your info and case number.

@s-bolyard issue is a separate issue that is being investigated. Efforts will continue there and of course you will receive updates directly from 00813389.

I had an issue where the custom images on pages/atlas maps were disappearing/deleted every time the configuration wizard ran to rebuild the website. Setting the image files to "read only" (file property) solved the issue for me.

Thanks for the feedback @chippershredder. I checked the properties of the image files and they are all set to read only. I have a change scheduled for tomorrow morning to do the SAM hotfix, so I'll check my maps after it's finished because it will do the configuration wizard then.

Hello everyone. It's been a week and the images that I've re-added have stayed after running the above SQL query. Per SolarWinds support, Dev is working on the patch that will resolve this issue. Unfortunately he does not know the timeline of when it will be released. The work around for now is to run the above SQL query after you add images to map. I've added a SQL job to run this query every 30 minutes, just in case I forget.
