Polling engine's polling engine is another polling engine? Any benefits?

Do polling engine servers normally poll themselves? Does it ever make sense to have a polling engine be polled by another polling engine? Not sure I see a benefit in doing that, unless another polling engine stores a backup of something, and then I can see having that offloaded on another server would be good.

I inherited a number of Orion servers, one primary polling engine and several APE's. They are all polling hundreds of nodes. The primary polling engine server is being polled by an APE. Some of the APE's are polling each other, and a couple poll themselves.

Thanks but I did go searching - used polling, poll and APE and none of them produce hits on our system. Then after your post I realised my idiocy....

there is an out of the box alert you can duplicate and edit specifically for this. "No Polling Engine Update in last 10 minutes"

We've discovered by luck that 2 of our APE's were not polling but because none of the services had failed the server monitor agent (BMC) didn't notice, so didn't alert.

So, are you able to walk me through how this alert should be built, or is there one I can copy and modify for our use?
